A few months ago I saw a guy selling an nice 86 GN that ran 8.7's (without nitrous) and was streetable for $30,000. This seemed pretty good to me considering how much a nice GN goes for.

This brought up a question for me... How much does it cost to take a stock 86 or 87 GN and make it run high 8's or low 9's (no nitrous) while still being streetable?

Does anybody have an idea of what it would cost to do this? Its my dream to one day do this, so I'm wondering how much I could expect to spend.

Thanks!

Dan Kimball

It would be MUCH cheaper to buy an 8 or 9 second TR than it would cost to build one from a stock GN. You would probably want to start from a $1500 non turbo regal anyway, because use wouldn't use much of the stock parts in a similar condition $6000 GN.

Figure about 20K for the stage 2 motor, Turbo, electronics, trans and rear (in parts)

since when is a 8 second TR streetable?! sheesh i thought 9's were the extreme limits

Greg Krings low 9 second car seems to be streetable since he drives it a lot. It may have an 8 in it. (it definately would if it didn't weigh 3700lbs).

4.5L of Stage 2 motor and turbo bigger than your head can be surprisingly streetable, I guess. His biggest complaint at our last club meeting, besides the cost, was the gallons per mile it gets at WOT :)

hehe...yeah once after a WOT blast on a full tank of gas you can expect to refill it just as fast as a nitrous bottle!

:) Greg is correct. I find from the time I leave the pit for a 1/4 mile pass to the time I get back the car will use a little more than 1.5 gals of gas. LOL

But as long as it's running good who cares hehehehe

How fast do you want to go?

Talk to Dave Ficcus he has a nice low 9 second car. He told me in bowling green he drives it on the street all the time. I would say try to buy a car already complete. There where a couple of mid to low 9 cars in bowling green going from 25-30K.

Good luck

Terry Houston sold his 8.60 @160mph Stage II '87 GN for $29K and from what I've heard this car was street driven once in a while.

It is always best to take advantage of someone's unrecoverable labour costs! ;) :) :D

Buy a pre-built and proven car!

definitely buy one if you can find it! You'll prolly pay $.10 on the dollar for an already built one.....as for streetability---dream on(oh yeah, you can drive it "on the street", assuming you can get it licensed, past smog checks, and have an endless supply of 116 gas)

How bad can the milage be anyway? With a lot of boost the need for huge cams isn't necessary so the milage can't be that bad, I wouldn't think? A buddy built a 557ci BBF that ran 8.9 w/ n2o and it got 10mpg driving a round town which is better than my stock PU truck and he has more fun...lol..

ks:cool:

Cal Hartline has one of the nicest fast cars I have ever seen and I saw him drive it around Bowling Green at nite.

Oh yeah, the parachute on the back... that's just for looks:eek:  :D

Dave Fiscus and Greg Kring both have very nice cars as well.

I'm 18 , and your right in that it is more then I can afford right now...but I can dream can't I!
In a year, I'll sell my current car and put the money towards an 87 GN.

Sounds like the best deal is to get an already completed ultra fast GN. Cool!

I'm 18 as well (didn't look at the month, just the year in your profile). Just sold current car and will be finding one soon (or so I hope).

As much as I would like an 8 second Buick, I don't have the bank. Even if I bought the car - I wouldn't be able to keep it running. Things break.

My goal is 11.50's on pump. I'd like to go 10.99 without a cage (on race gas of course).

I found a nice stage II 87 GN for $20,000. Runs 9.5 and is streetable. I think I would be very happy with that. Getting $20,000 of spending is the tough part. Depends on what I can get for my car.

...

Where in the hell did you get that much money?

I must be doing something wrong. :o

If your talking about the GN, I didn't buy one, I just found it for sale. I don't have $20,000 to spend.
You talking about my Forester?
