just what the title says ,are headgaskets done more often on alky?would like to hear also how long after you installed the alky before you blew your first headgasket?

head gaskets

i used it for about 500 miles and lifted a head 26 psi:eek: i got no knock though, just guess it was going to happen...the car was a blast to drive. i was going to chasis dyno it but it happened a week before i was going to chassis dyno it. i believe i could have put over 400 hp at the rear wheels but i will never know because i am putting some ported irons on now..................Bob

Don't jinx me. :p

Good news is I have a set of low mile stock heads to port if it happens and I'll do what Super 6 is doing.

Both cars have alky. and pump gas, daily drivers, and both in the 11's.

Both well over 100K total miles on them too.

About 40K on one and 10K on the other while using alky.

I must of had well over 600 1/4 mile passes before I blew my first set running on alcohol. Stock longblock setup.

If you run big boost, and big timing... things can happen.

See you put a kit and run 18 PSI.. you say great... then bump it to 22.. no knock.. woohoo.. then 24.. then 26.. then 28.. then you start questioning maybe I can add timing.. lean it out.. etc.. you get greedy and poof.. there it goes. Greed is what usually kills it.

But the same can be said running race fuel. You get greedy.. poof.

And there is no telling what shape the gaskets were in before you start spraying.. how many times the motor has been detonated since 1987.. it all chips away at the gasket.

If your content at 22 PSI boost.. then the gaskets are forgiving to mistakes. At 28 PSI.. things can happen fast.

I've blown one gasket last year with my TE-44 turbo and 50's combo with the stock intercooler running 27 psi on alky...IMO the stock intercooler sucks and I was really pushing the limits of it on that kind of boost...no knock but my original gasket on the passenger side went trying to race a Z06 on the highway...needless to say I didn't get very far and luckily I was able to drive the car home unscaved because the gasket blew on the valley side and no water got in the motor...it all blew out the intake and underneath the car! Replaced all gaskets over the winter and summer this year but the motor is still bone stock with no head work or cam or anything...27 psi on the current combo everyday and they've held up so far...consistant 11.50's with about 30 passes done this year...
