i just upgraded from my stock location K&N w/ the lower canister removed to a 9" K&N Cone mounted directly off the MAF...but heres the problem, I have no way of mounting/supporting it the MAF...ive know about 90% of you have them so fill me in on how its mounted....right now i put the lower half of the canister in again and the filter is resting on that....thanks, Steve

I've done it two ways
#1--made a bracket that attaches to that lower bracket the original air box sits on. I bolted the new bracket into the existing hole an bent it so where the filter an maf meet, rests on the bracket. Then fastened them together w/ a clamp. Get it?

#2-got a k&n from Kirbans an it came w/ the 86/87 mountin bracket, so I just replaced that w/ my homemade bracket. Used the same clamp.

So i guess it was the same way both times, just a different bracket. And whatever ya do, make sure the k&n is clear of the radiator hose so they dont rub.

i dont see the point of getting a 9 inch K and N filter
when you are attaching it right to the Maf
I dont see how it can be very effective, when it gets so hot under the hood, you coudl fry eggs on the top of the hood.:)

what i did was , go to www.buickgn.com
and just order the "Hot Air" ""system from the Maf sensor"
its a huge azz 4 inch pipe that extends from the Maf to right out behind the headlight and curves 90 degress down , then you attach yer 9 inch K and N

its a lil pricey, but it looks good, and has to be way more effective, cuz your getting temperatures from outside, not from under the hood

plus that thing really make your car whooooooooooooooosssssshhhhhhhhhhh:D

I'll post my question here too...

How do you route the cold air kit ? Do ya haveta cut the car by the headlights and re-locate the purge canister ?

Firebird350 - To answer the above mounting question...I didn't use a 9" filter...I just got a shorty K&N filter. I used the cable ties (tie wraps, zip ties, whatever ya call um) around the neck of the filter.

I used one cable tie around the neck of the filter looped thru the metal bracket of the cruise control assem. It works great. Holds it away from the rad hose up nice and tight.

I'm possibly opting to buy the buickgn.com kit - chrome's got me hooked - but i'm worried about having to move the purge can and maybe even cut a larger hold behind the headlights.

if ya look at your car
behind the headlights there is a big opening in the frame
it just slides right thru there, and elbows down

and for the canister, u just take 1 bolt out and sort of twist is out of the way and bolt the 1 back down

i like the buickgn.com piece but I plan on doing an engine swap in the next year...maybe two and dont want to spend too much more on the hotair engine....I did notice that large opening and was thinking of running my own cold air system for minimal costs and sacrafice some good looks.....maybe I will just give in and get the piece from matt after all....who knows

Go to local harware store and a get a 4in round peace of pvc, and some drain pipe adapters. You can wrap the pvc in heat wrap or paint it. I like the one piece at buickgn.com put money and the extra weight is my factor. I know somebody has a picture of one there homemade cold air intake made from pvc.
