A freind has a 86 GN , when he bought the car the previous owner stripped the paint to bare metal, beautiful paint job. But in the trunk the RPO service label was removed and not put back in how could he prove its a GN and not a t-type. Car has all the proper GN stuff on it though?

thx mike

To my knowledge, there is no way to tell the difference between an '86 T-Type and a GN other than the WE2 option code on the trunk decal. One possibility might be to check the header panel in front of the hood to see if the underside has been patched where a hood ornament might have been. The T-Type had the hood ornament in this location and the GN was clean from the factory. Another possibility would be to look for the original build sheet which had all the option codes on it. It can be found in several locations, under one of the seats, under or behind the rear seat in the springs, under the dash stuck in the wiring, under the carpet.

To my knowledge, Buick doesn't offer to decode the VIN numbers.

To make things more interesting, all 1986 TR's were T-Types. Grand National was an option package. In 1987, Grand National was its' own model. HTH, Brian

True up to a point but the GN continued to be an option to the T-Type (WE2) in 1987 all the way up until the end of production in Late June or July. When GM decided to continue production (only on GNs) until December to satisfy the insatiable demand, they made the GN a separate Model. This occurred somewhere between VIN number 455xxx and 458xxx.

Look underneath the carpet under the rear seat and you may find the paper that says what interior codes were used. Alough if it wasn't a GN, and they swapped black carpet in, they probably woulda tossed it. Sounds kinda strange that they would remove the RPO sticker. Even if they were to paint the under side of the decklid, you could always mask the sticker off.
