Hey guys noobie here, i just got my car back from my buddies shop, it was in for a head gasket job which turned into complete new heads.
Any how i got it back and now the check engine lights on, im wondering how i would go about pulling codes, i know its obd1, everything i have is for OBD2 and wont work on the turbo regal, i know you have to count the check engine light flashes, i just cant remeber how i can pull the codes, i remember back when i was going to school to be a tech i though you jumped two pins on the aldl connector, is there a specific way to pull codes from these cars and if not what 2 pins do i jump at the aldl connector, im not use to working on cars this old lol im use to 96+ vehicles.

Then when i do pull the codes is there any link on this site that has the codes listed?

Thanks guys i apperciate any help.

ok i jumped the pins i get a code 12 which is system normal and a code 23 which i beieve is
intake air temp sensor out of range, low
next step is to find the iat and test it, any ideas on how i can go about this?

The IAT on a stock set up "I think" it is in the air cleaner. I may be wrong on that. Look for it someplace in the intake duct work. Some have been relocated to the plenum. Code 23 will be caused by leaving it unplugged from the connector.

At room temperature the sensor should be at about 3200 ohms. I'm not where my reference materials are, so I don't have any exact numbers. But easy to tell if it was open, as that is what is required to set code 23.

yea i know there usually in the air intake piping, i looked all over this thing and can not find it anywhere, my guess is just like u said its unplugged which makes sense because everytime the cars started the check engine light comes on immediately that usually happens when a sensor is unplugged.

i bought this car last fall and the old owner sure had it hacked up pretty good i can only imiagine where the iat sensor is lol, all i know is that i didnt have this code before i dropped the car off at my buddies shop so its something he did.

i just have no idea where it is or where to look that i havent allready. anyone know specifically where the iat is in a stock location?

Here's a pic of the iat location.

ok thats where i thought it would be, my car has all aftermarket piping and a open element K&N air filter, i can not find that little sucker for what ever reason, i guess my next step is to start looking anywhere where it could have been relocated, its just two wires correct?

I spent 10mins looking under the hood everywhere where you think it could have been relocated and still havent seen it, i also dont see any connectors unplugged either.

Buying someone elses project car at times can be a real pita lol

Thanks for the help so far guys, i figured it should have been located right by the maf in the air tube but mine must have been relocated. Now to find it

Yes,just two wires. The plug is probably just hanging there somewhere close to the stock location, unless the wires were lengthened. Here's another pic ,looking from the driver side fender.

See if its in the rubber hose that connects the open element air filter to the maf. If not there, is there an empty hole in that hose? If so, thats where the iat is supposed to be.

The other place to look is in the back of the dog-house/plenum under the coil pack.

check for spread terminals...a very common issue on older cars......i had a guy crying once because i fixed his coolant temp code with a paper clip...(bent the terminals back in).....he thought he was gonna spend hundreds of dollars and i fixed it with a paper clip...;)

well i found it lol, the old owner had i just laying by the fender well out in the open, and when my buddys shop worked on it the iat must have come unplugged and fell off, i see the clips are broken so it prob didnt take much to knock it off, i got a new sensor and im going to install it correctly into the intake tube.

Thanks for the help guys, i just started digging around and found a connector plug just laying around and it was the iat connector.

I have alsob been trying to figure what that sensor was. I have an 86 that brought and that sensor is connected but is not installed into any part on te car. It is just laying across one wires next to the powermaster.

I have an LT1 MAF, that has provsion for the sensor. Am i supposed to just leave it connected, but not installed in anything and just secure it to something?
