I found a t-type steering wheel on a turbo skyhawk that is kicking my arse to say the least. I spent about an hour trying to no avail. I took apart nearly the entire dash trying to get the wheel off. All of the nuts are off of the wheel, but the wheel is still mounted on the column. Ill try again tomorrow, but I want to get the wheel before someone else does. Im trying to avoid buying a steering wheel puller for a just this wheel wich seems kind of stupid.

Got any tips???

you don't have to buy it you can just rent it from your local auto parts store. You could try a big rubber mallet but there's still a chance to damage the wheel so your best bet is to just rent the puller. It's waaaaaaay easier and won't damage the steering wheel.

Presuming you did remove the center nut and lock ring that secures the wheel to the splines....right...???

If so, sometimes if you're fairly strong, you can grab the wheel at the 9 and 3 o clock positions and pull out and the wheel will come off...but not always. However if it doesn't want to come off easy, don't keep pulling.

The steering wheel puller isn't very much....last time I rented one from Autozone I think it was under $15. And you can return the puller/get your money back once you're done if the puller isn't damaged/missing parts.

Put pressure under the wheel and hit the center of the column with a hammer. @ or 3 times and it will pop off; just be ready so it doesn't hit your face.

leave the center nut on the end of shaft when doing this.. that way, the wheel won't fly off and hit you in the face. i wouldn't use this method on my own personal car, but since it's in the junkyard and you don't care about the steering column, then go for it..

you could also ask if the yard has a puller you could use.
if you have a harmonic balancer puller, that also works as a wheel puller.

Take the advice and buy a cheap wheel puller.....heck you'll need it twice...once to remove the one in the yard and once to remove whatever wheel is currently on the vehicle you want to to put this wheel on.

Saves time and effort....

wacking the one in the yard you may damage it as an end result....

wheel pullers come with various bolts so they can remove just able any steering wheel.
