i've gotten it to work by using vmware through xp... not the cheapest solution, but i got it free through my school.

it just basically boots up a virtual computer in dos while still in xp, and i can run direct scan just fine on it... only problem is i cant get it to interface with windows to send the data files into xp... but i can do everything inside of direct scan and save the files on the virtual machine and open them back in direct scan... i'm working on figuring out how to transfer them to xp for viewing in microsoft excel.

if you install windows 98 in vmware on a virtual machine, you CAN run direct scan still and send files back to the host operating system (windows xp).

i havent tried that yet.

another option is a dual boot windows 98/xp, but you have to restart the computer to get out of xp, then again to get back into xp... that can be a pain, but it works

i've tried simple dos emulators with no luck, because none i have found have parallel port support :(

all that probably didn't help you much though :)

I put the executable in the root directory, then hit start>run>then type DS >enter.

and that works with the data logging and everything?

that hardly seems like it would fix the problem

do you mean just like c:\

or the operating system's:

c:\windows

EDIT: i just tried both and both had the same lockup problem when going to the realtime display

No it doesn't. He's obviously leaving something out.

You have caught me spreading rumors. My desktop runs XP and can initiate DS and read files that I have logged inside the car with my laptop that runs on Windows 98. I have never tried doing realtime with a machine with XP, connected up to a DS prepared vehicle.

My sincere apologies.

if your laptop has a floppy drive, you can make a win9x boot disk with DS on it, and it should also be able to save the log file to the floppy..probably wont have access to the laptops HDD as they are different file systems..Could always make a FAT32 partition and dual boot laptop into 98 for DS runs..

Not tro hijack the thread, but I just got my Direct Scan in and want to be able to use it. Someone have a simple way to set it up on XP? I really want to get this going. Thanks,
Matthew

Go into your setup of the Bios, you will usually see a screen when you first start it up, like "F1 for setup" or something similar, I think on Dell's it's F12, and you can setup your Boot order there..

I got it thanks, I am actually going to put 95 on the laptop so I can run the DS on the harddrive.

Thanks for all your help!!!!!

Matthew
