Anyone have a console mounted Hurst Quarter Stick shifter in their TR? If so, how much of a pain in the ass was it to install?

Brooklyn,

I have read a couple of your posts. I don't get why you bought your GN. It is clear you just got into them. You don't appear to have any respect for them. Every thread you have started was a question on how to hack your car up. I question if you really even have one first of all (first you were going to hack up your 86 and now your sig says 87, which is it). I also question why you would want to hack up such a low mile 87, if you really own it. You even admit yourself it is perfect.

Mustang people don't mind their cars being hacked up, maybe you should go back to those.

just a few questions

Why do people switch to the Hurst shifter? Is our shifter inadiquate after a certian # of mods? When to you want to down or up shift with our stock shifter?

Killa6

I've been into GN's for several years but this is the first time that I've had the means to own one. Contrary to what you believe, I do own an 87. Two weeks before that I had bought and 86 moonroof car with 16k on it. This was the car originally in my sig. After having the car appraised by a certified appraiser and then gone over by a respected Buick guy I cancelled the deal due to some problems that were pointed out to me. Such as poorly touched up stone chips along both rockers, bad springs and shocks, wrong grille, digital dash, etc. After I cancelled the deal I found a 9600 mile 87 hardtop car on gnttype.org. I drove down with my Buick mechanic and after careful inspection, I left a deposit and had it shipped the following week. I do respect these cars and I'm not looking to hack it up. I'm trying to upgrade the car WITHOUT doing any damage to it. The digital dash question I posted a couple weeks ago was for the 86 and as you can tell, I wanted to change the dash over to analog without wrecking the car. What I do to my car is none of your business. You should find out what the whole story is before you go running your mouth and making accusations with no basis. Every car and motorcycle I've owned in the last 10 years has been upgraded to the way I wanted it to be without doing damage. I shouldn't have to explain to you why I do what I do. Suffice it to say that I have kept all the original parts and the car can be returned to stock at any time. I don't tell you what to do to your car, don't tell me what to do with mine. Besides, I thought the whole point of this board was to help each other out, not pass judgement on what others do.

Brooklyn,

It is obvious you are new to this site. I am not telling you what to do with your car. I am just voicing my opinion on people who hack their low mile cars just to look cool driving a GN.

I just feel you fit a certain kind of GN buyer. You know, the kind of guy who buys a low mile car and starts with all these mods that he clearly knows nothing about. He thinks he is cool because he can afford a his BUICK mechanic to do all his work. He is the type of guy who is more concerned about the LOOK of the GN. He will put in a $2000 Stereo system just to look cool.

This is your first GN according to what you said. You prbably haven't even gotten used to what is like to drive a turbo car. You are probably on and off the turbo like crazy. But, yet you will put a lot of money into mods to make it faster. I will help you out here! Save the money on mods for now. Get used to the fastest car you have ever driven before making it faster otherwise you will wind up wrapped around a tree.

Killa6

Maybe your illiterate or perhaps just ignorant, but it seems as if your running your mouth and making judgement calls again. Let me just repeat what I told you before. My GN still has the stock radio and stock speakers and the only mods that have been done to date are the same bolt-ons that everyone else does. Not that it's your business of course. Again, I can't understand why you have such an attitude problem. This may be the first GN that I've owned but that doesn't mean that I don't know how to drive it. As far as my mechanic is concerned, again none of your business, we are working on the car together. He may be my mechanic, but he's also teaching me a lot about the car. I've had faster cars in the past and I know my way around an engine. However, I feel better having help from someone that's been working on these cars for the last 10 years. No point in going in blind. If you have some problem with me or the way I do things to my own car, that's too bad. I participate on these boards for guidance about how to properly go about upgrading this car, not to have some wiseass start problems. I don't know where you got the idea that I was hacking my car up in the first place. Grow up.

Brooklyn,

I am sorry if I offended you. I wasn't trying to. I didn't realize how sensitive you were. I guess I hit the nail on the head though. You may think I am illiterate but I guess my Master's degree in Psychology would prove you wrong there.

Because you are so defensive about the issue at hand, you hacking up a perfectly good GN, shows I am right. You have had the car how long and you are already in for mods? You will be putting a stereo system in very soon, I have no doubt about that. I have you pegged perfectly and you know it. When you go to a car show you will brag more about your cool stereo than anything else about the car.

P.S.- I highly doubt you have driven something faster than a GN. Tell me another fish story.

I haven't read any of Brooklyn's posts to give him a psychological evaluation, as it seems killa6 has, but I'm sure someone with a masters in psych. has better things to do with his time than to rip up someone for asking a perfectly legit question about installing a quarter stick into the stock console. Obviously is seems Killa6 has something personal against Brooklyn, so it's probably best to take it to e-mail or PMs than to publically try and degrade this person. JMO
And just FYI, the GN isn't the fastest car in the world, stock LS1s tend to be much faster stock vs stock, so in reality, it would be very easy for Brooklyn to have driven a faster car than a GN. You should probably take back your psych degree and get a degree in Reality 101.

It's funny how you can make a judgment call like that having never met me or knowing anything about me. A lot you good your degree in Psychology does you. I'm still unsure of how I'm hacking up my car though. When was the last time you saw it? Oh, you've never seen it? Hmmm. I'm not offended, but I am bothered by the fact that you don't have anything better to do than bash me and my GN. It's pretty easy for you to be a tough guy and talk **** when your 2500 miles away huh.

p.s. I guess when you were looking at my sig you missed the Suzuki that does 9.50's all day in the 1/4 mile.

Who drives the Suzuki when it does 9.50 in the 1/4 mile, your Suzuki mechanic?

I wasn't bragging about having a masters degree. I was just using to show I am not illiterate as suggested by BrooklynGN.

Brooklyn, keep up doing whatever you want to do to YOUR car. You have a GN, so you are cool. I dont care if you want to put a 307 oldsmobile engine and a 3 speed manual on the column in it....Still a GN.
Killa, you can stick your psyco degree in your GN and run right down to anywhere where I dont care!
I dont have a GN, so you do or not have to listen to me or read this.

Since I do not care what you do to the car as it yours, I will see if I can help. One person that I beleive has a console Quarter stick is Turbo Dave. He might be able to answer some more questions thatn I. I will say that believe it or not some cutting is needed under the metal overlay. For this reason you might want to look for a good console that is already cut for an aftermarket shifter. Anyway, there is some pplastic that would be in the way. I personally installed a Hurst promatic V2 shifter in my car. It looks good and works great. I removed the old shifter and its components. I removed the upper mounting tab from the trans tunnel so I would have extra room for setting in the shifter aas I needed. I drilled the spot welds out so I could bolt the tab back in if I wanted to go back to stock. I then mounted the shifter placing it right where I wanted it it. I did have to move the console back about a 1/4 of an inch. When looking in the car you cannot tell that it has been moved to the rear any. I then lined everything up to the overlay and did the final mounting and finishing. I used the original cable hole. So far looks good and seems to be working great. I hope this helps some.

It's not really necessary if the trans shifts at the right rpm for the individual combination. But for those who do shift manually (for whatever reason that may be), the Quarter Stick is much more precise than the stock TR shifter. The Quarter Stick has fixed detents that prevent overshifting, and allows you change gears with a fluid movement rather than trying to nudge the stock shifter forward just enough. Shifting with the Quarter Stick goes as follows:

1-2 shift: push the shifter forward one gear.
2-3 shift: pull lever on shift handle, push shifter forward, release lever.
3-4 shift: push shifter forward into overdrive.

And it looks much better than the stock shifter IMHO :D

i like an aftermarket shifter ( stock looks like crap imo ) do the install in a correct manor and you'll be stellar....

is that degree the same one dieons " special friends have " ?
just joking dude, glad to see you have an edumacation..

Brooklyn, it's your car, do what you want to it!:) I guess I am one of those dreaded guys that modify low mileage cars, too. Oh, the horror, what sacrilige. My car had 4700 miles on it when I bought it and I was thinking about what mods to do as it was being flat bedded home from the bowels of NY. It already had a Ford 9" rear in it and non-stock wheels so I guess we can blame the original owner. I just kept going from where he started and haven't looked back. I sold all the original parts that I took off of it too. Double horror! It's my car and I love it the way it is and if you don't like it, don't look at it. Besides, people who "hack up" their cars are the majority of my customers.:D

the stock shifter is dog doo-doo if you are racing......I use a B&M Megashifter and it works just dandy (and, egad, my car only had 28,000 miles on it......)

So what about the stock shifter? How do you shift with it?Where do you start in 1? I was just leaving mine in the overdrive I guess I was making a mistake. Do you do this even for everyday driving, and how do you know when to shift?

What's with the rash of idiots lately? I may not post frequently but I am an avid lurker. I had to come out of hiding for two reasons:

1). I would also like to put a Hurst Quarter Stick in my car.
2). To let the intellectual Killa6 know that it is absolutely none of his business what anyone else does to their cars. To be intelligent enough to earn your Masters Degree yet foolish enough to engage in this argument is puzzling. Maybe he is just bored and having a bad hair day or something. It sure is interesting how mouthy and tough people can get when they are sitting at a keyboard:confused:

Boy! the way this thread was going, I came within a hair's breath of closing and locking it. All of a sudden it was just a flame match with NO technical content!!

As for my shifter, take a look in my sig, there's a link to my photo albums. Look in the GN album for shifter picks.

It's a B&M Streetstick, same as a Hurst Quarter Stick, or B&M Prostick.
