Now the trans is solved

But now it's going to have diff problems. I don't think the girdle for the diff they have will help in this case. Good job on the swap!!! Your daughter is a little cutie, she's taking credit for the whole job I bet.

Mike

I am glad there are people like you stepping up to the plate and solving all the issue's out there.

Idle curiosity, how long is a Vette 4L60E IRS center section combo front to back?

Nice, how heavy is that thing? looks like a good 80 pounds right thur. When are you guys gonna find a way to make a 4 speed T400 without any gear vendors unit attached? That would be worth its weight in gold.

Wouldnt that be a 4l80?
That is pretty much a 400 with od

Never heard any feedback on that tranny when I was taking the plunge, and wasn't interested in being the test mule. How many 9 sec Buicks have one of these units? and whats the feedback from running with one? I remember a Stage car with one in it, but the convertor selection was not right at the time. Aside from that I have never heard anyone on this board raving about it. I do know its about $3500 though, so thats why I went the T400 route.

the 4l80e is a great trans ,just like a th400 and much stronger than the 2004r.We have several in gbodies and all are working well.We are the only company with a functioning reverse pattern full manual vaqlve body for the trans and are putting the finishing touches on our transbrake for it .thanks for the appreciation.

Chris, do you have any 9 sec cars on this board running this tranny? I don't mean to sound negitive. But I would heavily consider switching over to your unit if I had actual feedback from guys running these at the track in a 9 sec GN. I love my T400, and don't really miss the 4 gear, but at the same time it would be nice to see that I am not limited in my travels with the car as well. My car is 99% street and 1% track. I will continue to follow your progress with this unit. Right now what I got works very well and I am extremely pleased. So I don't mind the switch, but if and when that change happens my "EXPECTATIONS" is that everything continues to be bang on. Keep up the good work.

Frank Gordon on this site had a 4l80 behind his Stage 2 car. He bought the car from John Nguyen. The transmission worked very well but I do think converter selection is the issue. The converter looks like it weighs 60#. You could contact John about the info, he'll be glad to help you I'm sure.

Dusty does a T400 convertor work on these 4l80 trannies? Have you had a PTC convertor made up for such a tranny? if so do you have any more info you can share? Lastly what is the weight difference between a T400 and a 4l80 tranny. It seems that everytime I try and strengthen something in the car I end up adding more weight.

The 4l80 converter is completely different so the T400 will not work. I have done several 4l60 converters for n/a or n2o LS cars and one 4l80 converter for a turbo F-body. I don't know the weight but it's got to be very heavy. The converter and tranny in Frank's car looks like it came from a tank. John Nguyen did the 4l80 swap so he may can share his info on weight and who he got the converter from.

no one here is using them but i have several customers using them in g bodies in the 9s.if youd like swap info i can put you in contact with a customer that has done it.it is basically a th 400 with a front overdrive unit that is stronger than a gear vendors overdrive unit, and much more compact.

Dusty, Officially I went 10.001 @ 136.7 mph. So no 9 sec 4l80e car for me. However, I must say that my car weighed 3780lbs. 1.43 60 ft. I basically ran out of track/tune time the last time I raced the car. I'm confident it had a 9.6x in it.

Mike, sounds like you "really don't miss 4th gear". so.. why would you care about any of this.......

Chris, I would be anxious to know if you solved the slow tbrake engagement of the Rossler unit.

I was using a 9x11 TCS billet converter. I can say that "that" unit was tight, seemed to make good torque mult. and never flinched on me. I believe it was the 1st Rusty ever made for a 4l80e.

My vote would be that if you "really weren't going to drive on the highway", then use a TH400. Pretty no brainer to me. We drive a ways in TX to get anywhere around here, so 4 speeds are almost always better.

Last, my car would run mid 10's on pump gas and 15-16 psi. The best thing about the 80e is the driveability and confidence that it wouldn't break on you. My guess is these vette and camaro drivers really don't like 3 speeds.

Simple, Its a street car. I had called Chris and talked to him on the phone about this tranny a year and a half ago. The feedback was not out there at the time. I have always had my eyes set on this tranny, and will make the switch of course when that comfort level is met. Nobody likes sacificing anything with their cars. Losing a gear is no exception. I truely love my T400, but if I can have the best of both worlds I would do it in a heart beat. I think Chris does amazing work, and one day we will make that love connection. But like anything else, you research before you jump into anything.

Chris,

I take the info in this thread to indicate you're using some type of computer controller with the 4l60/4l80 setup.

What is the feasability of the 6l80? I'd like to get that wider gear ratio, or can a 4l gear ratio be modified to be wider?
