I think most of the noise comes from the link bars on the retrofit lifters. Somewhere in the tech or engine tech forums are a couple of threads where guys installed the oem style hydraulic roller lifters with dogbones and the hold-down spider, from the fwd motors. Have to drill and tap two holes in the lifter valley and make a couple of spacers for the spider, which is darn near trivial if the pan is off so you can flush all the shavings. I've been thinking of doing that just to see how quiet it is.
Hmm, wonder if you could use some spring tabs that hit the bottom of the intake manifold to keep the spider down, and just attach the spacers to the bottom of the spider. No drilling required. Hmm, Jason
