here's the deal...to start with i am not going to get upset...right now i feel like i need a punching bag....

alright....i got my rebuilt tranny back last night from andy lehoskay and spent most of the afternoon today renting a penske truck and dolley to tow the car from virginia to maryland to the shop to get it in...well, we get it in and i tow it home.....i really wanted to test this thing so i put the driveshaft back in it ( in the cold ) last night before i backed it off of the dolley....i poured seven quarts in it as it didn't have any fluid in it at all....i fired the car up and let it warm up...took it out and let it go through the gears for about 10-12 stoplights and the shifts got firmer the more i drove it...i stopped to get gas and when i left the gas station i wanted to give it a little gas just to hear the damn thing chirp a gear or something...i didn't spend 800 dollars to not hear/feel anything that night....well it shifted a little mushy and a little early so i stopped at another store to check the fluid and the stick was wet but not like i remember seeing in the other trans when it was full....now i put in two more quarts and drive off....i don't even really give it any gas and it won't shift to second.....i give it a little more gas, more than i wanted to and it finally shifted after winding it up....i slow down to have it go through the gears again and same thing......the next light i get to i stop and start again and it won't shift at all this time.....WHAT THE HELL DID I DO WRONG!!!!!!!!!!!???????????????????????????

NOW IT'S 12:59 AM AND I'M TIRED BUT CAN'T SLEEP BECAUSE I WANT THE THING TO SHIFT LIKE IT IS SUPPOSED TO BECAUSE I PAID FOR IT TO WORK RIGHT....

i know andy wouldn't stiff me so i'm not mad at him or anyone, i just want the fu2king thing to shift like it is supposed to...if it wasn't for bad luck i wouldn't have none at all....

i have run out of money for this project, between spending the money for the trans, money i'll have to pay for using the shop, renting, towing, gas....i'm burnt out and this project is not going to be funded anymore....

all i want to do is hear the turbo spool and hear the tires chirp through the gears, is that to much to ask?

could i have put to much fluid in it??....

ttt...this morning when i drove the thing it would bump second pretty firlmly at light throttle, but it felt like it shifted to early into second and to mushy when i gave it a little gas....i rode all the way to work in second, but when i hit the long straight away here coming to work i gave it a little gas and it finally shifted to third but didn't go into overdrive........

WHAT IS THIS, PART OF THE BREAK IN PROCESS OR SOMETHING....ANY HELP/ADVICE WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED...

Not that I am an expert here, but check your fluid level and DEFINITELY check your TV cable adjustment.

this may sound stupid, but when i look at that damn stick it has fluid all over it sometimes...how the hell can you tell where the fluid actually is? i'll go check now, i need a break from this paper work.

can to much fluid cause irratic shifts?

Too much fluid won't cause erratic shifts, but will cause fluid to come out of places it's not supposed to.

Fluid level needs checked with the car warm, running, and after having moved the gearshift selector through the gears. Otherwise, it's going to be way off.

I don't know who you took it to, but if it wasn't someone who's familiar with these things you might be in trouble. I spent $1,200 on mine before I had to spend another $3,000 to have it completely re-done right. At the first $1,200 I had already spent more than I had wanted to.....

Good luck.

Jim

nah, andy is the man...i've ridden in cars he's built tranny's for...i have confidence that this will be resolved, but i'm just tired of tranny problems....all i want to do at this point is drive the car...to hell with racing it....which is what i wanted to do tonight...but oh well...

alright...i figured out one problem...the t.v. cable was out to far towards the radiator/front of the car so i readjusted that....also, i believe that i don't have enough fluid in the trans....second shifts firm at part throttle but third seems to slide in there....i only put 9 quarts in the trans last night, and now that i think about it the trans was completely empty and the convertor was almost empty...what do you guys think?

just got back from driving it with two more quarts added and it shifted great when it was in overdrive, except for the fact that it won't go into overdrive.....then when i get back to work and badge into the gate the damn thing doesn't want to go into second gear...so i stop and put it in first manually and take off, and it shifted into second when i shifted into third.....then it shifted into third when i shifted into overdrive.....this is crazy....well atleast the shifts are harder now....

shifter linkage adjusted right? governor weight sticking? If you are certain you got the TV adj spot on, i'm at the end of my knowledge for suggestions. I think after I rebuilt mine I put dang near a whole case (12 qts) of fluid in it to get up to full on the stick (stock pan). -Chuck.

I usually try to pull the tv cable as tight as possible and then loosen it up until I can get it to shift into overdrive at 45mph. Tight would be to pull it as hard as you can towards the firewall. Tight will raise the shift points, increase shift feel and will raise the line pressure. Loose with lower the shift points, make the trans feel like it is slipping and lower the line pressure. Make sure you have this right. IMHO it might be better a little tight than a little loose as loose can quickly kill a new trans.
Checking the fluid is a little tricky. Most people strick the trans dipstick in so the lettering "transmission fluid" is easily read and not upside down. I found that sticking it in upside down made it easier to read. The other thing was to let it sit for a few minutes after adding fluid as the fluid tends to cling to the inside of the tube. Park the thing on level ground after it is warmed up and pull the stick and wipe it clean. You might have to flip the stick over to verify the level. Trust me, mine kicked my butt when I did it. What I just told you is my methodology. Others may have different opinions. Let us know

problem solved...took the tranny back to andy and we pulled the pan and the valve body and the throttle valve was stuck from junk in either the converter or the cooler ( which i thought i cleaned thoroughly ).....i have driven the car 100 miles tonight and i just can't stop getting wheel spin going into second gear..my neck is just so soar from third gear also......   ....

i am a happy camper...bruce you hit it on the head when we talked yesterday when i called you at work....thanks for the advice.....that was the first thing we checked and that was the only problem that i had.....

thank all of you for your help....:D :D
