how many of you have a problem with your 3" downpipe always banging around the frame??? mine does it no matter how many times i adjust the exhaust from turbo to the mufflers...it still finds a way to rattle and bang a little bit on the frame and i can hear it inside the car when the car idles or when i accelerate...it's ANNOYING and i have tried all different combinations to make it not rattle...all bolts and pipes are TIGHT and i have an engine tie down strap and the thing still rattles? is there a way that i can just wrap the pipe in header wrap or something just in that section where it comes close to the frame??? i can't think of anything else to make this stop!

what kind of DP?

how are your motor mounts?

if its a Houston pipe, are you using a clamp on the test pipe/cat (don't do it....let it slip)

Which DP do you have? My 3" THDP fits perfectly. If your car has high mileage, maybe the motor mounts are starting to sag a little.

A new set of mounts may give you the clearance you need.

Good luck!

Mine does it also, after having it off 6 times to bang it, and adjust it. Its funny how my THDP never hit anything. Looks like its time to save and get another one and get rid of this POS im using now.

Don has a Postons 3" pipe I believe. Don I have the same pipe, but no tie down strap. Mine fits TIGHT. I cant even budge it. I think its either your motor mounts or the fact that the tie strap is pulling your motor towards the drivers side. Over the winter I would install a set of poly mounts and ditch that strap, it is probably acting like a band aid for the mounts

Don, try this.

I have a 3" THDP and it made this clanging noise for awhile until I finally tracked down what it was. There is a very small bolt that points toward the ground on the bottom of the metal cover that wraps around the air conditioning equipment on the firewall on the passenger side. Confused yet?

Follow the DP down from the turbo until you get to this location and see if this itty bitty bolt is still in there and if the pipe is resting on the bolt. The bolt is hard to see, but it can be seen from up top. I had to take mine out cause it was driving me NUTS.

yes i have the 3" poston's two piece DP...and the pipe bangs on the entire frame not just one bolt...it's in one section where i have like 1/2" clearance! ahhhh lemme keep trying...i wish i had a THDP but i was poor at the time when i needed a downpipe and just went cheap...wish i had a dump too:(

Try using a crow bar between the frame and the DP, wedge it in there and then tighten the DP bolts.

Easier to do when the car is on stands also.

I would do two things. One check your motor mounts. I would recommend getting a set of the HRPARTSNSTUFF motor mounts. They will keep the engine from flexing as much and will support the engine better shoudl your old mounts be sagging or extremely soft. This in turn may provide better downpipe clearance. It did in my case.

Many bang on the heat shield and also the body seam metal which sticks out 3/4" under the passengers seat area.

I clearanced those out and no more banging.

well i think i fixed it this time...i took off the clamp holding the dp to the 90 degree elbow and slid the pipe down some so it would clear the frame at the bend...also tightened up everything real tight and now it barely moves...excellent...hehe

Do you have a 2 piece downpipe? If so, welding the joint in place once fitted properly is a good idea. I did it and everything is fine.
