I Can't shift into Park

I have hooked up my transmission to my rebuilt motor. I have no floor shifter as yet so I'm using the shift linkage at the column. I can't adjust the linkage so that it will shift all the way up into park. Does anyone have any suggestions has how I can fix this. I have consulted the service manuals I have and they say to set both transmittion and column to neutral and set the linkage. However the column as no specific indent for the gears it just has play.
