Good luck finding a shop to do remove/replace cat with test pipe. Shops can lose their license if caught. I've never found one that would. You can cut the DP yourself with a sawzall and install a test pipe yourself. Just measure carefully and leave a little extra; it's easier to take more off than put back on.

You have many things to look at:

Vacuum leak
Boost leak
clogged fuel sock
clogged fuel pump
clogged injectors
bad plug wires
bad coilpack
bad module
bad MAF
Chip not seated correctly
Bad ECM
Many other things too, those are just off the top of my head.

Go through each system air, fuel, spark and you will narrow it down. Are you throwing any codes?

nope no codes...

i have new plugs
wires

i have adequet fuel pressure so maybe bad injectors if anything
for some reason i am maybe thinking a bad cam sensor!??
kinda seems like the car just isnt in good timing kinda thing... that could be chip though

well i am going to work on car for a few
ill reply back in about 10 mins

i got the car to start!! well for 2 seconds

first i unplugged the MAF and tried to start it... nothing
sounded really bad and made some backfiring noises

then i took out the chip.... again made bad noises

so i took off my up-pipe and sprayed some starting fluid into the intake
car started right up.... then it died
so i am thinking i have a big fuel problem....

my guage says i have pressure.... what would cause this problem then?
i would think since the guage says that is well... my problem is with my injectors and the fuel rail...

should i even bother replacing the fuel filter right now or what?

any comments on this?

did you try and drive the car with the maf unplugged? See if it'll run sorta ok that way? if so, you have a bad maf (the car will run in batch fire mode with the maf disconnected)

i didnt have time to drive the car... it would stay running long enough

maybe a fuel filter would do this?
i know i am going to get a new fuel pump and sock and all that good stuff

fuel filter cause something like this?

Doesn't the crank sensor tell the injectors to turn on??
Check the crank sensor on the bottom front of your motor, see if is loose or broken. It's right behind the harmonic balancer.

Muffler shops will generally drill a small hole in front of the cat and one behind and then read the difference to see if it is clogged. They don't always smell bad when they go and they will completely close up if run too rich for a while. Still check the Cat.

alright thanks for the advice

i got the car running again though
running like garbage though

i put about 10 gallons of gas in it and primed the intake real good with starting fluid and the car actually started up and ran... really weak though

it wouldnt rev up really even when i put my foot to the floor
i am starting to think that it is the fuel filter but i also want to pull my cat off of it...
i do have the ATR 3" high flow cat... Anybody want it? looks really new and all but i am going to pull that off and get a test pipe put on and see how runs... i dont really like having a cat anyways
well i will check the cam sensor as well as putting on a new fuel filter tomroow also... would a bad fuel pump or fuel sock have this affect also?

i am going to replace that soon also
i dont know what type i have and would like to know i have a good pump... well that isnt to worry about til i get this dam car moving

also when the car was stumbling around (it wouldnt idle i had to keep giving it gas) i pulled the MAF plug off and it sounded like it killed the motor... didnt run good at all... backfiring and everything
i plugged it back in and it kinda smoothed out but car still really choppy like it is only firing on 3 cylinders or getting no fuel
well i will reply tomorow .... thanks for all the help everyone.,.. i dont feel like paying 1000$ to get it fixed !!

That is totally not true dude. It may not smell and it CAN casue a no start.

I'd also throw a fuel pressure gauge on it.... 10 psi low can do as described.

Hey, maybe it was running on 3 cyls......like you got a bad coil? That would do as described too...

You are probably right, I just figured that if it was running that rich then the plugs would be the problem before the cat would cause a complete no start. my bad. When you talk about putting your foot to the floor and it doesn't rev much it still seems like a massive intercooler hose leak(i know you said you checked that) or a MAF, thats exactly what mine acted like when mine went south. turbojim maay be onto something with the coil idea as well, keep us updated.

An intercooler hose leak would not cause the car to not even be able to rev up at all, or take forever to get to 25 mph. I've had some pretty massive vacuum leaks, and was still able to drive the car, just didn't run well.

The reason I suggested the cat was one time, years ago, my high school business teacher had a turbo supra. He had it for a short time, then noticed it began to run rough. One day it started to slow down, and he had to give it more gas to keep going. he ended up having it floored, and still only going a few mph. He pulled over and called a tow truck from a pay phone. He noticed from a distance his catalytic convertor was glowing cherry red. The car caught on fire right there and burned. I would think that if anything else was that bad on your car, we would get some codes, or something you've done already would have helped.

Check that coil and module, and lose the cat anyway, let us know. good luck!

have you checked your fuel pressure while driving--sure sounds like a bad fuel pump -- unless one of your hoses is partially off-- a bad cam sensor will usually cause alot of backfiring

yeah i am doing the fuel filter in about 10 mins... ill see if that helps....

i got the car started and it ran really ruff again and just died after 5 seconds... if it isnt the fuel filter... i will have to look into a new fuel pump

the cat... i dunno about... the car was running really rich when i bought it... the FP was 15 lbs too high!
that was driven like that for who knows how long...
if i disconnect the exhaust after the cat... would there be anyway to tell if it is bad?
odor? hotness? anything to look for... the honeycombs inside looked good last time because i was really intrigued on how it worked and was looking in there for a while!

well ill reply in a few

thanks for all the answers guys!

ok so i go to do the fuel filter... i cant find it
it is nowhere to be seen... not on the DS frame rail or on the PS frame rail... is there a PICTURE guide on where it should be.... maybe i have to fuel filter ??

i dont think so but i jsut cant find the bloody thing
remember my car is an 84 with the 87 motor if that would make a difference... looks like the car wont be moving today for sure :( :(

it is kinda hidden by the frame. it tucked up there pretty tight.

seriously, to save money, if this does not work

test your coil pack and ignition modual with the coil pack tester from postons. it sounds like a CP/ign modual to me.

dont do the $$ stuff first:)

well a hot airs original fuel filter was on the driverside fuel line infront of the block about mid way up, i don't know if you're still using that or what. But check on the front of the motor on the fuel line going up to the regulator. Good luck
