Well I was doing some work on the car last night and had the turbo's inlet hose out so I decided to check for shaft play and I found allot of it, about 3/16-1/4 inch of in/out play.
I talked to a turbo shop this morning about it and they said that the turbo is in desperate need of a rebuild and it could start smoking real soon and even damage the housings and I would loose the core:redface: .
Anyway they told me a stock rebuild would be about $350.00
And a rebuild with a TE44 up grade would be about $695.00

Is it worth it to get the TE44 upgrade For $695.00?
or
Can I get a newer type turbo for about the same amount of money?

My goals are mid to high 11's on a REAL DD.

Hey it works now!

I really like the gt6131e as a replacement for a stocker.

Going to drive the car with the Waste gate rod removed.
Would that still hurt the turbo?

Yep.... it will still spin...

I'd locate a replacement .... fast....

IMHO.... for the $700 ... you can find some great newer turbos.... what stall do you have currently? Are you planning on changing it anytime soon? What are your short term and long term goals for the combo?

edit... I see your goals...

I would consider one of the newer 61 mm turbos... and a stall upgrade..... however... a old school 44 will go 11's pretty easily.

+1
Go with a Precision PT-61. Perfect for 11:30's and slower. ;) You will need a 3200 stall

I am going to ground the car.
It looks like contaminated oil killed the turbo. Tell me what you think.
My last oil change was in the first week of October. Mobil1 synthetic with a bottle of EOS and Ac-delco long filter for the engine and the big ac-delco filter for the turbo.
I have been getting a lot of Blow-By and my oil smells like Gas.
Could the oil have gone bad enough in that short time to kill the turbo?
If yes I have to rebuild my bottom end before I install a new turbo and kill that one too.
BTW I do have a BIG oil filter just for the turbo so I doubt it was some type of particles that did the turbo in.

Anyways I like what I have read about the TE-44 and how it works good with the stock stuff.

Again the Goal for this car is 11.50s
