I am making a custom front mount intercooler and want to change to an intercooled car turbo. I am already gonna have to re clock it, but want some pics of the things I'm gonna have to modify to install the rest. I heard of the tb being off wack, but still working so that's not a problem. What else? And how much is the 450 cfm worth over our 390? Thanks

hey I'm sorta near bethlemhem I think, I'm about 20 min north of philly. I cant help ya with the turbo issue, but I can tell you that I have an 87 turbo in my garage now and gave up on the idea. I am planning on doing a custom I/C eventually but not till I get some $$. Check out turbobuicks.com and the VERY LAST forum is called MAGNA. we meet once a month and is a good time. I am the lone hotair guy so it would be nice to see another hotair around. We will be meeting at Thomas Chevrolet this friday and at cecil county track on the 10th/11th for the buick event. later, steve

You wanna get rid of that turbo? :) I can't make it to any meetings any time soon as my car is undergoing MAJOR projects right now. I would have to show up in my t/a :)

Blueta, is the CFM max flow numbers you state 390 vs 450 correct? I asked about that on the turbo & related forum and had no response. Thanks for that bit of info.

Well, I did a search on here and that's what I came up with. Don't know if it's correct or not though.

Think I am going to have to bug that forum again and see if we can get a confirmed answer on that. I thought I read something similar for CFM spec. I really need to find out, looking at using two 86-7 stock turbos (twin on 85 engine) for faster spool rather than go to single larger turbo.

Its actually a friends stock turbo sorry. I think I know someone trying to sell one tho. But, I also heard that using that turbo is NOT worth the hassle. If you're going to go thru that trouble to retrofit an IC turbo on there then just go with a TA49 or something of the like. What kind of T/A do you have. My first car was an fbody(can ya tell from my name?).

hey y not just go wit the intercooler conversion kit poston offers isnt that much better and easier? whats wrong wit that kit?

hey firebird yeah i have there catalog sent to me it was free but i cant find it at this moment but its very nice set up nice lookin it comes wit all the tubing u need the intercooler brackets and everything that u can just possibly need to hook up right on goes for about 1,200 but looks good and fits well u can just call poston and they will send u a nice fat catalog on all kinds of parts but they do have that kit conversion to convert to intercooler

I've got a few of their catalogs...i must have overlooked it....does anyone have pics of this setup?

If you're going with a FM IC anyway, the IC turbo is extremely easy. All you have to do is loosen the compressor nuts to rotate the housing. Do the same with the exhaust. Use the mounting ears off the hotair turbo since the IC ones won't bolt up. Use the 87 wastegate. The throttlebody bolts up and is tilted a little but it doesnt' hurt anything. If you're going custom, move the TB to the pressure side near the intake and put the MAF pipe directly on the turbo. I did the Ford intercooler for less than $450 total and it works great.

I forgot to add, as for the differences in flow, the fastest my car would go with the stock turbo was 106mph through the traps. This was with two different stock turbos with the wastegate locked shut and they would only make 19psi. I broke one and wounded another so I would say that's the absolute limit. The fastest I've ever heard of the IC turbos going is 114 but it looks like the norm is 110-112mph.

Thanks! That's what I was looking for. Also...how would I relocate the tb to the pressure side without another intake manifold?

poston has the whole setup and the pics of all the tubinf and intercooler and what not it shows everything u just gotta call them toll free and ask them to send u the catalog and its there i still cant find so i mght have to order anoither one

No Picture

I have the 2002 winter Poston's cat and on page 71 under the Front mount intercooler is the placement for the 84/85 intercooler. No picture just a few details a part # and price.

While I'm not positive, I believe the kit Poston's sells is the Spearco kit.

no i think its 2 diifferent kits poston has the whole set up thats goes directly on a bolt on maybe little changes here but nothing major and spearco u need other big changes ive seeb the set up for pearco looks like a lot to do
