I've made a decision to switch the car over to vacuum brakes. I've got too much money in this car now to gamble on the PM. My problem is, once I go vaccum brakes, I won't have enough vacuum to supply the system. I'll be running a decent sized hydraulic roller cam stroker motor setup. I need to go with a vacuum pump but not sure how to do it. I would want it to support the vacuum brakes and I want to draw crankcase pressure from both valve covers as well. I don't think an electric pump will be enough...should I go with a belt driven setup? If so, anything I need to know about for a 95% street driven car?

You know...I was told I'd probably be better off with manual brakes and no vacuum pump. Hell my car is only going to weigh about 3300 lbs and I'm running the 11" Baer brake system up front and running the light as a feather Alumastar wheels...there's no reason this car shouldn't stop good with manual brakes. I think I'll just go this route...my car isn't that radical where I need a vacuum pump system.

Vacuum

Must have been typing at the same time as that's when II saw your going with manual . If you do change your mind or just want to check out the site Go to dragstuff.com and look up vacuum pumps, there is a "very" good indepth article on the Pros and Cons of using vacumm they're not just for brakes anymore. GZ Motorsports has fabrictaed a Street/Strip system that would fit your application of 95% street it only works with non AC cars. The Street system actually lubricates the vanes and protects the pump from the stop and go driving associated with street driving, idleing and driving at lower rpm levels of street driving. They go over all the ins and outs of how much vacuum to use , Horsepower gains, decrease in detonation, better ring seal, pressure/vacuum relief valves, OEM air pumps vs aftermarket, do' and don't etc .etc... Check it out very informative worth protecting your Investments.

$02...

I use manual brakes on my 6T5 HEMI Belvedere.. weighs 3600#, and stops very well, w/ 12" Wilwoods, [brakes and M/C] and 11x 2.5" drums on the Dana.. But then my car's not very fast.:D

Manual Brakes

What manual brake system would you suggest Mr. Leeper for the GN. Been thinking about loosing the PM. There's vacuum ,hydraboost etc.etc. With manual you would need a different pedal and bracket correct?

the early,[68] Corvette non power M/C. The newer, alum M/C's that Wilwood makes also work well. They are made w/ different size bores, so a call to them might be a good idea.
As I recall, we did modify the pedal ratio for the non pwr units.
Sites such as Master Power Brakes, etc, have good info on such changes.

Manual Brakes

Thanks guys appreciate it was thinking of going with hydraboostBob:eek: but it was pushin 900 bucks. The manual brakes are 360 shipped.:D

brakes

Drag Race Brakes sells them and this is their list price.

1. Manual brake kit. 217
2. Firewall adapter leveling bracket 117
3. Shipping 13

Looks to be a bolt in and only 347 added an extra 13. Have they gone up? Would be "Saving" close to 600 over a Hydraboost and the old lady(wife) can handle that. Showed her some pics of the GNX and posts of other catostrophic PM failures and she's changed her attitude a bit.. She actually told me to order it right now I said I'd wait till next pay period. By saving that kind of cash may order new SS brake lines as I'm pretty sure the lines on the car are the originals, who would you refer me to?

There a good thread at T6p on vacuum systems. There's more Fast guys using them or thinking about getting one hooked up, Cotton,Otto,Ted etc etc...well for the other benefits not for brakes only...

Thanks appreciate you showing me where to get a manual setup..

Have you considered trying to emulate what the factory did with blow by out the breathers??

Edelbrock Signature Series Valve Cover Breathers: EDL-4410 - summitracing.com

I am going to try this route, get two of the above ( $8 each ) then an oil catch can off ebay ( last one was $35 shipped ) then add on some nice SS hoses and add a nipple onto the maf pipe. This should suck enough vacuum out of the valve covers and leave oil in the catch can during boosted runs.

Gonna try this as soon as the new motor breaks in and I am ripping it again with the alky.

Then you don't have to worry about the vacuum pump sharing any vacuum with other sources.
