my dad wants a scan tool again and started asking me to look for one for him. i told him about turbo link and direct scan, he doesn't want it to be hard wired in like direct scan, and he wantsit to be more flexable than turbo link (more cars even though he doesn't have any other cars to use to with). He wants some kind of lap top based program that plugs into an obd 2, and works for most gm cars. to top it all off he wants it cheap, under $200 minus laptop. he keeps telling me about this one he saw on ebay, but doesn't know the name of it and can't tell me anything about it other than he wants it, and its a company based in arizona. can anyone help me get my dad off my back?

crap gold bricks, thats good! thats what i've been trying to tell him, but he does insist that theres something out ther that works and i'm sure hes not going to quit bugging me about it untill i find it. i'm trying to find a needel in a stack of needels.

Under $200 is going to be the deal breaker, especially if he wants OBDII capabilities of more than very generic, basics.
But try here.

If its over $200 and does everything that should be ok, as long as its not outrageously priced, keep it reasonable basically

I'm going to do the impossible for you, contact "stevemon" on this board. He sells a program called soft scan that can be used on a bunch of GM cars. I bought it from him about 6-7 months ago and a used laptop for, I think $150. If you just buy the software I think it was $70. The program is like T-Link and is great to tune your car with. :D

I don't think soft scan does OBDII ?

OBDII is a totally different animal (we've been playing with a prototype and have successfully hooked up to several cars, but it's a lot slower than I like ... we've got a lot of work to do!)

Also, I don't think it does nearly as many vehicles as TurboLink v4.x?

turbo link shows that it does a ton of cars, but most of them are all the same, theres really only 5 or 6 types of cars it does, i thought it covered a lot untill i really looked at what it does.

Every 2 weeks we are adding VehiclePaks with more... and it's a heckuva lot more than 5 or 6.

Alot of cars are closely related, but have separate requirements (even if the engine is the same). A good example is the LT1 variants ... and the 3800 variants.

For example there are 6 major flavors of 3800 cars to 1995 alone (and we support 2 of them with the 3rd and 4th being tested right now). Not to mention the oddball Reatta/Toronado stuff.

Trucks span a large range from the older systems to the newer ones (including the transmission module that we are testing).

I guess the point is that all the vehicles are in the plan to have most GM OBDI vehicles supported by year end via releasing VehiclePaks (for FREE download).

i didn't know you were making it for more types of cars, its been a long time sence i've looked at the list, guess i should do that. that might open up my options some...
