Ok here goes...I brought my GN to Eric Shertz on friday for my trans problems..Well wouldnt you know that my car doesnt even have a real GN rear end.
The gears for my rear that is in there now are 2.23!! I dont know what that's doin in there, but somebody before me mustve screwed up the original one..
Anyway, Eric said he can build it into a 3.42 and it's already a posi, so that's one positive thing.
But I mean to me, this car is pretty quick as it is..and now once it gets to a 3.42 with a rebuilt trans and converter shouldnt I expect a HUGE difference in low end power and acceleration??
Is this odd or what?

Is that even possible??? Never even heard of that gear size....

i had a car with the similar problem and the only thing i noticed with the correct gear ratio was a correct speedo.

why build up a 7.5 rear end? u will bust it to pieces when u start building up your motor.

get a gn rearend ( 8.5)

surej

Please , please, please, do your self a favor. Pay the money, get an 8.5. My 2.41 posi turned into a gum ball machine. You sound like you got boned, like me. I bought thinking it had a GN rear and got screwed. Even a peg leg 8.5 is better than what I have.

I would also hope its a 3.23 because you can't put a 3 series gear on a 2 series carrier unless the 8.5 is somehow different than other GM 10 bolts and 12 bolts..

i have the correct 8.5 3.42 posi for you in nj

i live in north jersey, asking 600 drum to drum 8.5 posi from a 1987 gn(still in it) needs two wheelstuds, other than that just bolt it in let me know nickg@aiov.com

Wait, before he changes the gear ratio, lets go for a Top-Speed run out on the salt flats.

He will need a wing and bullhorns to keep the car on the ground:D
Hey I bet that guy was running a mean set of highway gears:rolleyes:

That's just the thing..I don't really plan on building up my motor.
Just a few bolt-ons, and that's pretty much it..

It will be ok close to stock, but you have to be more careful. Wheelhop at the wrong time and SNAP.

A lot of Monte guys have 383's and ZZ4's in front of the 7.5 with mixed results

You DO REALIZE that you'll be paying AT LEAST $700-$800 buck
or MORE for a GOOD 8.5 inch Correct Rear, don't you!!!!!

There's REALLY no shortcuts here!!!!

These rears alone are worth so much that MANY folks are removing them before sale to UNSUSPECTING buyers:eek:

I've even heard of a Rear & Trans swapped GN that someone
paid $6500.00 for the car. Without these 2 gems, the cars are worth MUCH LESS!!!

Well I've driven it like this since I bought it (with the 2.23) and it's been fine other than the fact that it doesnt belong in there..

Also: Eric explained the situation to me. He said that if I was gonna build the car up into a race car then doing this would be pointless and that I'd NEED an 8.5''. But since I'm only gonna be doing some bolt-ons here and there that it'll be fine with a 7.5''

A 7.5 rear CAN live to some solid 1.6 short times on slicks if you're not an idiot about it.. If you do not plan to heavily modify the car and mainly it is a driver, you should be fine. However, it is worth taking into consideration the amount you are going to pay for gears for the 7.5 and having them set up vs going ahead and finding an 8.5. Also, if you look hard enough, you can find an 8.5 for a "reasonable" price.. I just recently sold a non posi for $250.

As far as the 2.23, I actually had a set of axles out of a 7.5 that had 2.14 gears in it. Talk about a highway cruiser..

2.23 gears

Just wondering but what's you'r highway mpg? I would think great.

Guys,

Don't forget RESALE value, if you're going to spend the money anyhow.....might as well spend a little more for the 8.5, then, at least you'll have some RESALE value!

If you're going to kep it "Forever", then forget about it.

That's easy to say, but it NEVER ends up happening like that. It ends up being an addiction... and obsession!
