identifing a 9" rear

I found a 9" w/ disc brakes, but I was told by a buddy that a ford 9" and a ford 8" look the same? Are there any numbers or anything to look for to tell them a part?

Easy to distinguish..
If you were to remove the third members with a socket and ratchet you can get to ALL the nuts on the 8". On the 9" you would have to use a open end wrench to remove the bottom 2 bolts.
