lately i've been getting more knock than usual at WOT along with a little smoke during the knock. plugs look good and the wires are only a year old w/less than 5K on them. i've got a feeling it may be time for a new coilpack/module but i dont know for sure. it is the original coilpack, still has the sticker with the date on it (XX/XX/86) and i assume the module is also original. these 2 parts have some serious experience, 115,000 miles worth to be exact. now, i know there is a way to test the coilpack. is it worth testing at this point and if so does it require any special tool to do so? details to sort out this problem are as follows:
stock turbo, IC, inj
307 pump with hotwire and adj. regulator
thrasher 92
currently running 17 lbs of boost
50/50 mix of 93 and 100 octane UL
newer afs 20 o2 sensor
good tps and iac settings............

the car is in a good state of tune with the exception of the knock at WOT. i'd think i should be able to run 17 lbs of boost easily with the fuel mix i'm using??? any help appreciated.
thanks again, aaron

Take off the Intercooler to TB hose. If there's oil inside, you've discovered your problem. Sometimes if the turbo bearing goes south, enough oil enters the combustion chamber to cool off things, thus giving you more knock for the same settings. Hopefully this isn't your problem, but it's one that's available.

Casper's makes a coil pack tester.

However it is cheaper to buy a new spare coil pack.

If it is black smoke at WOT I'd replace the coil pack.

At the miles you have both my original coil pack and the turbo oil seal were shot. Isolate the problem and then fix it. :)

guess i should have explained further. the motor and turbo are both rebuilt with aprox. 20K on the rebuilds. the seals in the turbo appear to be ok, there is no evidence of oil in the intercooler or throttle body. are new coilpacks and modules still available or is it even necessary to buy oem parts? gnttype had the coilpack part # as 25533542, i looked at gmpartsdirect for a price and was told that it the part # was no good, anybody know the correct part #? as for the module, is there a recomended test or is it even common to have problems with them? thanks for the help, aaron

Aaron, I think it would be a good idea to go ahead & get a known good coil pack/module combo from John (above link). He's a good guy to deal with & at least you will have some spares on hand. Amazingly, you can still get the oem coil pack & module from GM or a Buick vendor. Buying from John will just save you some $$ for right now.

How much fuel pressure are you running? How much knock retard are you seeing?

You can check the the coil pack with a ohm meter. Check the resistance between the front & rear terminals on the coil pack. You should read between 11-13k ohms. Sometimes temps will affect the readings, but this is usually a reliable test 75% of the time.

Let us know what you find.:)
