all,

i'm looking for a stock replacement turbo, used, cheap, not looking to spend much money. some of you know my issue, some don't....but sort of in short, here goes: i will be leaving here for good around Feb 20th, need to 1)get the car out of impound lot. 2) get car in running condition in order to ship home. 3) get car in running condition to get safety insp.&registration renewed. as some of you know, my turbo took a crap on me right before i deployed last year, allowing oil to blow through the ebgine causing it to smoke quite badly, if i can get a turbo on there and run some engine cleaner through the engine ( whats the best engine cleaner and where can i get it??) , get the horn to work, get with Stew to trade back wheels/tires then i can pass the safety insp and all will go well. heres the issue, and where advice is needed...i am hoping that if i do the above, new turbo& engine cleaner run through the motor, will it fix the problem? if not, what else could be making it smoke, it didn't smoke til the turbo crapped out and i figure the oil blow-by through the motor caused this, especially since the tailpipe ends were caked with oil residue. time is ticking and i will be going home for a month over the holidays, so time is of the essence, advice/help is appreciated. if anyone has a good enough to stop the smoking and get me through a safety insp turbo they can part with, i'm interested. reason i've decided to keep it is that i've had little to no interest from anyone to buy the car, and no where to put it once i get it out of the impound lot. i figure the fixing of the car can be done in a wekend, i'd like to do it this weekend as i leave for a month a week from tomorrow. i don't mean to burden anyone with my problems, but all i've seen from this group is support and it is appreciated.
sorry for the huge post.

Wish I could help but, the stock turbo I have has the same problem. It blew the oil seal thus, creating lots of smoke through the exhaust (Especially upon deceleration). I would buy it for myself if I had the extra money.......unless you wanna trade for a decent car (not a GN) that already runs fine.....

If I find a cheap turbo Ill be sure to let you know although they probably wont pop up for sale before the weekend. The horn doesn't work at all?? Id check out the fuse box first and if it keeps blowing fuses than you must have an electrical short somewhere in the circuit. I wish you the best of luck.

yea, i still am not counting out selling if something comes up, my biggest worry is 1)pursuing the fix process and then finding it to be something other than what i believe it to be then ending up SOL because i am on a very short time limit and then being stuck not having a plan or not knowing what to do with the car upon my departure from the Army. and 2) not being able to sell it before i leave and being stuck in the same predicament as above, no plan or no idea of what to do with the car when i leave here. what(non-GN) car would you consider a trade for the GN? to add to the issue, the military pays for 1 vehicle to be shipped, i have the GN and my get-around car, my '96 Saturn, one of the 2 must go before i go. to you and everyone else, i don't expect to get much more than $3,000 for the car, as i said before i will consider any offer, but i can't go a whole lot lower than that because i need to pay it off....but with time ticking on me,no offer is ridiculous to me. but Derek, get back with me about the trade.

also, how big of a deal, how hard and how expensive is it to replace the oil seal and would it solve the problem, and as far as expenses/and time spent on the repair..is it worth the fix, or just better off replacing the turbo?

As far as the turbo seal goes, it would be best to replace the turbo as a whole because you dont know for sure what else in the current turbo may be bad. For instance not only was my oil seal blown but, the thrust bearing was also very bad which caused the compressor wheel to contact the compressor housing. All in all, it would need a lot of new parts to properly rebuild it (costing almost if not the same as a slightly used turbo) not to mention that I dont think anyone on this island can properly balance the turbo. As far as the car that I have, if you already have a daily driver than it probably wouldn't be of much use to you as it is just a 4 dr. 95 Chevy Lumina.

get with Stew to trade back wheels/tires

How accessible to you is this impoundment lot? I mean are they going to let you work on it in there? Well...if they let us swap the tires right then and there, let me know when's a good time. I'm purty busy this whole weekend with luncheon b-day parties, but if you give me a time, I'll see what I can do. BTW...can you pass safety with your rims/tires!!! stew

if you've ever been to the Shafter Flats, you go through the entrance, the first left then the first immediate right then a left again, you will find the Auto Craft center, which allows military personell acces to tools, lifts, etc...all the goodies, i can leave the car there, but its $4.00/ day. the impound lot is straight in the gate, past that first left you kinda veer off to a gravel parking lot on the left and its a fenced in area down there in the middle of a track. i'd like to get it the short distance from the impound to the car craft center, but at $4.00 a day, it seems pointles to get it out just to pay for it to sit there while im home on leave, when i can leave it in the impound as long as i cantact the mp and clear it through them, but i have to work on it at the craft center, not at the impound lot. i plan to put on the original wheels/tires which are in the trunk of the car, the hoosiers are shot, i just wanna make sure we trade off before i leave for good thats all.

Well...it's going to be either before you leave for vacation or sometime when you come back...so just post up when the car is going to be accessible to you so I can swing by there. stew
