inconsistent 1-2 shift

What would cause an inconsistent 1-2? By that I mean sometimes it`ll bark em good into 2nd & then the next time barely a scratch.

not good enough....you could fill it till it pukes and still cavitate it.
However, A pressure gauge will tell you for sure

I shall do another press test & see if I get a blip on the 1-2 & get a bottom feeder filter from ya , right Bruce.

Well..... the test part yes, as for the bottom feeder, it would be a good idea but try to diagnois first, so you dont spend money unecessarily. But then again, that pan and sump are always a good idea.

Hey I'm by no means a tranny guru but I had the same problem on my 87 and it turned out to be the anchor hole on band had stretched and wasn't always getting all the band to make contact, eventually it stretched and my 1-2 shift went to hell. Thats probably not the problem, but just in case nothing else works its something to look into. This was on a brand new tranny, and I ended up buying a new 2.5" Alto band from bruce and it works great. And the sump and pan from bruce work good as well. Good luck
