hello,
I had an 86 GN last year and had the crank break in two and had to sell it. Well now i'm kinda looking into getting another turbo buick after i sell my car and find a good deal. Well i know that the hot air cars are usually a lot less expensive, so i was wanting to find out more about them. First, how well do these cars respond to mods as compared to the ic'd? How fast can you make these things? What are the most common problems that occur? How dependable are they? And anything i missed let me know about.

thanks
dan

Initial purchase cost may be cheaper, but dollar for dollar to get them to be "as fast as" the 86/7's is a lot more expensive...If you want to get an 84/5, and don't want or need a 12 sec car and want a fairly reliable high 13 - low 14 sec daily driver, then the 84/5's would be the cheaper way to go...If you want to go faster than that, it gets more expensive...Not to get in a flame war here, but if you do want to go faster, than the cheaper way is to just start out with the 86/7's...

Hot air

In agreement with fjm, the price does seem to exceed that of an intercooled buick when speed matters. It all depends on what you are looking for. The car is fast, and mods are pretty easy to come across, and for the novice like myself, most of the work can be done in your own garage, but the price will leave you begging for that ic after 12 sec.
