Infrared link?

Need some thoughts on if this idea is doable. I'd like to mount a quality head unit in the trunk, leaving the interior appearing absolutely stock.

System so far:
Boston NX97s 6x9 in rear deck through adapter plates
Boston NX57s 5.25 coax in doors
Coustic 481QE 60wx4 clean
**Stock head unit, with iriver CD MP3 player through cassette adapter**

My plan is to mount an Alpine 7874 or similar with infrared remote in the trunk, then run a piece of fibre optic from the trunk up to the guage pod in my console. The other end of the cable is pointing at the infrared port on the head unit. Theoretically I could aim the remote at one end of the cable in the guage pod and control the 7874.

Before I embark on trying to source the fibreoptic cable required, will this idea even work?

great idea, bit i can't tell you if it would work or not with just a fiberoptic wire or not. I woudl go ahead and get one piece of wire run it back and try it out. if it doesn't work, you should be able to hook a lens up to the input side of the wire. let us know what happens, thats a great idea.
