Is it hard to install a new cruise control lever with cruise control?? I notice that their is a lead wire that needs to be plugged in.

I have tried and tried but cannot get the lead line back down the steering column. Good luck
I had to just the line along the outside of the column to work. You are supposed to be able to pull the old stalk out with a line taped or tied to it and use that to fish the new one back down.

I read that technique on this board before.
Has anyone been able to tie a string to the cruise control wire at the base of the column , pull the old one out, tie the string to the new wire and pull it down to the end of the steering column ?
For some reason just sounds too easy.
Seems like there would be too many obstructions along the way, but maybe not.

Yes...that is exactly how it's done...but I would use a very thin wire...or some fishing line...you don't want it to break when you have it have way up the column...unplug the connector near bottom of column...the connector at the end of the stalk wire will have a little hole in it...put the wire through there and twist...pull the stalk straight out...then slowly start pulling the wire out of the column...go slow...if it feels like it's hanging on something it probably is...don't pull any harder...pull it back the other way and start over...it may take many times to get it out...attach the wire to the new connector and pull it back into the column...again may take many tries...there are a lot of things the connector can hang on inside the column but it will go through...just be patient...sometimes when it gets hung wiggling the wire works...

The string tying idea works fine. Just keep the knot small so the end can make the final turn up on top. Took less than 1/2 hour.

Im gonna give it a try this spring. My cruise doesnt work
and also the windshield washer pump doesnt work, so it might be the
stalk itself.
Should be easy to find out if thats it or a combo problem of bad pump and
bad cruise component.
Thanks
Steve

Here's a slightly different approach. If you tie a string or wrap a wire around the new turn cruise wire and you don't get the very end it'll bend and hang up in the column.

When i did mine the wire was stiff enough that I was able to slowly push it down the column and it turned out to be easier than a string.

some part numbers

Just posting this FYI:

25111260 - chrome, OEM discontinued from GM / AC Delco
Reproductions $20 on ebay.
DORMAN (HELP!) Part # 49284
Also available from gbodyparts, kirbans

25111290 - as above, black

25140376 - black (truck?)

22510732 - black

Maybe a GM parts guru (Eric Fisher?) can chime in and tell us what the difference is between 25140376 and 22510732?

I did this years ago and remember a plastic U-channel that needed to be removed from inside the column at the bottom. Remember it was not hard to get out...nor back in. Don't remember how long it was but it was white and 3/8 to 1/2" wide with 1/4" sides...but that was 10+ years ago so it could be also be blue and the size of Kansas :)

I tied a string (strong thin one) to the original wire, pulled it up and out...and then tied same string to the new one and pulled it back down. I think when doing this it's important to "streamline" the string tied spot so that it will go thru holes smoothly rather than "bump into" things on the way down. I usually use a little black electrical tape.

If you run into a snag when pulling out old, or in new,...don't try to muscle it further...pull back a bit on the other end and try again...etc etc.
