Am setting up a 109 block for the line bore of new steel main caps.

The 2 steel caps are .009" wider than the old iron caps.

Will the new caps need to be cut to fit the block ?

What is the amount of interference usually used between block & caps ?

Advice from anyone with experience setting up steel caps is appreciated.

Thanks

The caps DO need to be cut for the block. .002-.003 press is all that is needed. The press fit is to ensure that the cap does not "walk". Also, rechamfer the edege of the caps to fit the block chamfer. VERY IMPORTANT!!!!! I had a horrible experience years ago because the chamfer was not recut into the caps. I had a experienced engine machinist do my cap and girdle install and he failed to put the chamfer back on the caps. To make a long infuriating story short, he destroyed my block and the caps (all four of them)! Good thing I knew what to look for.

You should have less then .001 clearance, a .002-.003 interferance fit will not go together. Let the machine shop do it for you.

I'm also considering doing this to my spare motor, so my question is where or whose main caps are you using and where did you get them, thanks.
