Installing temp guage

Bought a mechanical Temp guage(heard mech guages were better...). Installing it inside car, the probe is Huge... Any ideas where to go thru firewall? Dont wanna just drill a huge hole. Maybe a grommet or plug I can take out then put back once probe is thru? Engine is out of car, so anywhere along firewall should be good as long as probe is long enuff... And where a good place to install the probe in motor?

You will find a rubber plug in the firewall just under/behind the master cylinder. Its about 1 inch in diameter....That should do
