what options do i have to upgrade my mundane factory analog GN speedo inst. cluster? I refuse to pay $1,000 for kirban's (close to it) I'm sure im not the only one that would like an upgrade, GNX type is what im looking for. will a monteSS cluster fit in an 87 GN dash? any help or ideas would be appreciated, i'm sure some one out there has done something creative. Plz, thanks, Gregg

There are several aftermarket kits available, but they are all pretty $$$. Other GM cars had different wiring harnesses, so it would be a project to adapt a cluster from an Olds or a Chevy- the ECM needs the VSS, for example, and that may not have been part of the package on something besides a turbo Buick. No boost gauge would be another question. And making sure the gauges were matched to the sending units might be tricky. The Buicks had different sending units for the digital dash fuel level and the analog dash fuel level, for example, so the fuel gauge from a "non Buick" might be off. If you price out all the individual gauges, the $$$ for the aftermarket setups don't look that bad.

Custom Dash

You have to weigh your time and frustration againt buying a completed panel that is basically "plug and play." I built a custom dash for my ProStreet car and it was a lot of work. I bought a Performance Instruments dash for my GN and I feel it was worth the money. Price out all your guages and material (connectors, wire) to do a build yourself and then compare it to how much buying a finished product costs.

I know it seems hard to fork out $1000 for a whole new dash but I did it and I don't regret any dollar I spent. It makes the car look SOOOOOO much nicer inside and I can go to car shows or to the track and not have silly questions about the factory dash. I get alot of compliments on it. I have a pic of mine on my cardomain website (link in sig). Performance Instruments built it and nothing but top notch work and service.
