There's an 85 GN near my house that is for sale. The guy selling it says he has an intercooler with it but I was wondering how hard it is to install on a non intercooled car and what all needs to be done. I was reading some other posts on here and I see some of you have done it so any info would be helpful. I'm just trying to make a fast daily driver. How much power might it add? Thanks for any info!

What intercooler is it? Ask him if it a complete kit? Piping, intake elbow(this is a key part),connectors, instructions? Front mount intercooler? Is it a kit that is made for the 84/85 TR's? If it is a kit it should be pretty straight forward install. You would have to mount the intercooler, run the piping, and re-clock the turbo.
When I bought my '85 GN it was pretty much stock with a spearco intercooler, bigger fuel pump, adj. wastegate, and adj. fuel pressure regulator, that was it. That ran a 14.05 in the quarter mile with stock size 215 tires on it. Easly capable of 13's.
How fast do you want to go? For 12's you will most likely have to at least upgrade to a 87 turbo or aftermarket turbo/injectors. But, intercooler and basic mods are an easy 13 second pass with a 84/85 TR. Stock 84/85 is a high 14 to mid 15. So, its that easiest bolt on power add for the 84/85's, I think.
Nick.

Thanks Nick, here is the info on the car: has rebuilt motor, 15K on trans, 25K on H.D eaton posi 3.73 w/ richmond gears, waste gate 19 lbs boost tps tech throttle enhancer, cold air kit w/ 9" K&N air filter, 36lb injectors, new radiator, forged aluminum pistons, high volume oil pump, new water pump, starter, creamic coated headers, 2.5: mandrel bent hooker exhuast, heated 02 sensor. Car is real quick, but the intercooler I have is the stock one from an 87. The guy had a bunch of conversion parts for it, but from what I've read it's really difficult to change it all over...at least more work than I want to do. I dont take it racing, but it would be sweet to have a 12 second daily driver :) I just want a fast car for my daily driver, and since I have the intercooler, I thought it might be a good upgrade. Also in the future I think I'm going to upgrade to a TA33 with 3" downpipe.

The conversion from a hot air to an 86/87 setup requires a complete tear down of the top side of the engine and you realistically need a donor motor in order to get every part. Mechanically on the topside they are different but the hot airs tune the same. It depends on your goals- Mine is the same as yours but it takes time. I am having a 2 1/2 downpipe put on tomorrow. I do not think there is a 3 inch downpipe for a hot air. Good luck

I think that we all should sit down and try to fabricate a 3" freakin downpipe for our cars, I could say that we all need one.

I hear that,
my friend owns an exhaust shop, I'll see if he'd be interested in making a few up.

I will post tonight after I get the 2 1/2 inch downpipe on as to whether there is any performance improvments. Brad

The 2 1/2 inch downpipe makes a big difference in my cars performance. The stock downpipe is actually only 2 inches in diameter on the inside of the pipe. The stock downpipe is actally a pipe inside of a pipe-very restrictive. In plain english my 12 year old son could already fell the difference and I was not pushing the car at all. My son said "Dad-don't get on it because I am afraid". I will test tomorrow and post under tuning the Razor kit. Brad
