I have an 84 buick grand national and i was wondering how many of you guys have done intercooler conversions and wether or not you reccomend just completly converting to an 86 or 87 engine or using a kit like the turbonetics kit.

Peace
Kyle

Intercooler kit

I have just installed the Spearco intercooler kit on my 1984 and it really helped the knock issue. I have turned up the boost to 15 and no knock with 92 octane gas. I would always get knock before I did the conversion. The reason I choose the Spearco kit is ease of installation. The 86-87 complete change over is a better way to go, but it would have been at least $3000 by the time I got all the parts needed to do the job. The Spearco kit was only $1200.00 complete. Hope this helps, Mr. Buick

When the turbomotion intakes were still available I seen no reason to make the change over. Maybe more availablity of parts but thats the only advantage. Now Mease is making a 3" terry houston style downpipe. But you cant get a turbomotion intake anymore. There is a pic on my link of the turbomotion V2 if you want a look. Putting on a i/c is a like a kick in the as*. I wish I had a larger turbo on mine when I got the i/c in. It was much stronger on the street. But the little 390 cfm turbo just couldn't cut it on the high end. But soon that will be fixed.

Im getting ready to do mine after the summer, Im using a stock 87 intercooler, and some custom pieces. Ive heard that a good intercooler setup on a mildly modified motor is around 70hp added. Hope this helps

Is there a site anywhere that can tell me how to scramble an intercooler setup together? I really would like to add it due to the lower intake temp! Thanks in advance.:D

Intercooler kits

When I was looking for an intercooler kit I found three ways to go, Poston, Spearco and swapping in an orignal 86-87 intercooler. The Poston is good if you want to really modify the engine and put in a larger turbo ($1200.00 plus turbo, larger injectors etc.). The Spearco is good for the stock or near stock ($1200.00 complete), The orignal 86-87 requires that you also move the AC, Alt, replace headers, up pipe, down pipe, cross over pipe, catalytic converter, exhaust, intercooler brackets, intercooler air scoop, crank fan, intake, and just about every bracket on the front of the engine ($3000.00) Hope this helps Mr. Buick

ok so basically im lookin at going with the postons set up if all of that is true. my dad said something about an atr kit. does anyone have any info on that?

Never seen an ATR kit, but if you find a intake that is modified, you can just pipe in a intercooler

actually now after discussing it with my dad i might be selling the 84 and buying a 86 or 87 gn or ttype. I dont know what im gonna do but thanks for the replys and the help. Once again proving that the turbo buick community is the best in the world
