The thrust is out of mine right now but i didn't hear anything. When Bob Slussers went out the knock would come and go. Couldn't really tell exactly where it was coming from. The last time mine went out it was bad enough the crank was rubbing one of the main caps. If you have 1/16" play it has to be into the crank surface. I doubt you will get by replacing the bearing only. The crank might be savable. They make oversize thrust bearings. I would pull the pan and #2 cap. The motor will most likely have to come out. Sorry for the bad news. Hope that isn't your problem but it sounds like it is.
