Hello everyone.

I recently noticed a small chip on my car’s windshield, and I’m wondering how serious it really is.

Some friends say it’s no big deal and can be ignored, while others warn it could spread into a crack over time.

How fast can minor chips grow if left untreated? Are there specific types of damage that are more dangerous to ignore?

I drive mostly short distances, so the stress on the glass is minimal. I’d like to understand the risks before deciding whether to repair it or just leave it alone.

thanks in advance for any help

Ya can get the chip filled at a local shop & see how that woiks for ya.

You can also leave it. I've had chips stay that just chips, & I've had chips turn into cracks.

You're OK, since you reference only a small chip and you drive your car sparely . But if the chip turns into crack and starts to spider out ,repair it. Me personally I've would have repaired replaced window asap, because I'm picky as hell.

Big temperature changes can cause chips to become cracks. Cool in the morning and then the air inside the car heats up and expands in the later day.

CRACK....

My car had a chip , low on the passenger side when I got the car in 2009 ...it's still there .

The closer the chip is to the edge of the windshield, the more likely it is to spread. If it is the type of chip that looks like a fish-eye, with no radial cracks visible, it will likely never spread. You can put a small dab of oil on it and warm it up with a cigaratte lighter and it will nearly disappear. (this does not strengthen it...just hides it)
