Been there done that. I bought my car with a 2500 mile build. Ran decent but never what it should have. Weird knock from time to time and then this spring on my first easy drive my motor sounded a little like yours. I got to drive it almost 1500 miles after I bought it.
Depending on what you need and what you want when you're done will determine how much you spend.
Try an find a competent machinist in your area. That's what I did and I have been using Dave Husek for all my parts and advice. He is also working with my machinist on the ins and outs of building one of these motors. So far it is working great but I do have a very competent machinist who is willing to share ideas with Dave. I will finish the build when I get the short block back with the rotating assembly finished.
Good luck
