Is the transbrake installed?

Sounds like a dumb question, but let me explain. The trans had a Stageright transbrake in it when it blew. I had it rebuilt. When I got it back the transbrake didn't work. I asked the rebuilder if he'd put the check balls back in the valve body EXACTLY like they were when he got it. He said, no, he'd put them back according to the manual--which would explain why the transbrake didn't work. Then I discovered that the trans body (not the valve body) is actually an '84 Olds 30G. Now I suspect that it might also be the wrong valve body and the trans brake is gone. I can drain the pan and remove it and the trans filter pretty easy (drain plug installed), but I've never pulled the valve body. Is there an easy way to check without pulling the valve body?
Keith

Depending on what year trans it was, the valve body should have "BR2" or "BR3" stensiled on the side of it. If it says "OG" on the side of it, you got screwed. They swapped your "BRF" trans for an "OG".

Sounds like you got screwed, Im sure Chris or Brian will chime in hear and point you in the right direction as far as seeing if the brake is in there or not.

Good Luck

If you drain it and drop the pan you will plainly see a pink stripe, and letter ID on the v-b on the side. Also, drop your governor, and make sure it is correct, even if the v-b is right.

Possibly a couple things why you have another case...

Maybe they could not get your modded trans to work correctly, so he may of swapped it for another 2004R. You know they are all the same. NOT!

Or, your case was somehow damaged during your failure and they swapped out a case.

No matter what, go there and let them know you are not satisfied. If they have your V-B, you need to get it before it dissapears forever. We see that around here all to often.:frown:

Hope this helps, Brian

Well, I dropped the pan and didn't see any pink stripes with numbers on the valve body. Where is this stripe? On the bottom? Driver's side? Passenger's side? Front? Back? There is a number stamped on the valve body-- 4203*0-7. The asterisk is circled and the same size as the 0. I didn't pull the VB for several reasons even though I have the instructions from the Stageright. One, I'm not sure what some of the stuff is (what's the accumulator [for example]?) or how to pull it without messing things up, and two, if I get it apart, pull the #3 ball and put it back together and the transbrake ISN'T there, then I have to do it all over again to put the ball back.
I already know I got screwed. It's definitely a 30G Oldsmobile trans. The question is, was it on purpose (i.e., stolen) or just the standard practice of replacing a bad tranny with a good one and they didn't know any better? The car went in for engine work immediately after, and that took a while, so the original trans (and perhaps valve body) is long gone. The shop that pulled and replaced the tranny didn't work on it, and the guy who did work on it has vanished--apparently he can't hold a job. Local shop and local guy. I've written to the shop owner, and when he refused to do anything about it, I wrote to the BBB. They're working the issue now. If they don't resolve anything, then it's on to small claims court. I want them to at least buy me a new transbrake. But I have to know if it's missing.
BTW, how do you pull the governor?
Keith

Between the valvebody and the tailshaft of the trans you will see a cover with 4 13mm bolts. This cover supports the governor. Just remove the cover and the governor will drop out with it.

From the factory, all valve bodies are marked. The GN valve bodies have a pink splash of paint on them and a stensiling of BR and a number.

Here is what they look like. I am linking to DRW transmission's site for these pics:

OG This shows up better in the pic than looking at it.

Haha.. the guppy.. I havent seen one of those in a while.

Does the OG9 indicate that this is the 3OG trans?
Keith

The number on the code doesn't matter. The code "OG" is used for all Olds 307s with the 200-4R. 1982-1990. This is the code that is painted on the valvebody or stamped/painted on the tag. If you are referring the the OG cast into the case than most 200-4R cases have that and it doesn't mean anything.
