I just got my front cover off to find the source of my cam sensor snapping the dowel pin, what I found was that the timing chain tensioner spring broke and the tensioner was flopping around off to the side and had stretched and was about to fall off. It seems to me with all the aftermarket parts available for these cars that there must be a timing chain set that eliminates the tensioner or some other way to do it? I am new to these cars so this is the first time ive been inside the motor. I have a dbl roller chain and roller cam but the tensioner is still used.
so I figured id ask the people who know,What do I do????
can I buy another timing set that will eliminate the tensioner? or is this a freak thing and I should go to the dealer and buy a new tensioner and spring and hope it doesnt happen again? Thanks for the input.

Yes the mod to eliminate it is to run a good double roller timing chain. The tensioner is useless with anything other than a stock chain anyway.

i have a double roller chain with the stock tensioner, thats probably where i ran into the problem. What brand timing set eliminates the tensioner?
Mine definately doesnt cause the chain is loose without the tensioner.
Thanks for the reply

Any really,I used an edelbrock chain once and a PAW chain both were great.A double roller will break the tensioner every time and hurt stuff. That is why it is only good with the stock link style chain.

Just went on the cloyes site and it shows a set but no footnote about tensioner being eliminated. anyone out there ever used a cloyes?

I'm lazy, I just call Jack Cotton, tell him what I need, give him my credit card number, and await UPS to deliver the right parts. He's spent alot of time answering my dumb guestions (I've also waited in line at the track while he's been answering others), so for me, it's just the right thing to do to support a vendor like him.

Actually bruce, I already sent him a private message asking all these dumb questions and telling him that if he has everything i need ill call tomorrow with my card # . He has never steered me wrong yet and im sure he will have what I need to get this thing going again.

Great minds, yada, yada :)

i have a cloyes double roller and i dont have a tentioner don't need one.

Gangster, Were your mains ever line bored? That may be the reason for your chain slack. You might possibly need to go under with your new chain. Check with Jack.

The double chain works as a saw on the tensioner because of the middle links. I found out the hard way, luckily I read on here not to use the tensioner with a double chain after I only had about 100 miles on the car so I took it apart again to find the tensioner bumper chewed about a 1/4 of the way up. I've also heard that double chains are not recommended if you are not using a high lift cam and high pressure valave springs as they tend to stretch alot on these motors, for stock type cams and spring pressures, a steel stock type replacement with the tensioner is recommended and you won't have any problems....your problem all stems from the double chain w/tensioner.

see what happend when you give a buick to a chevy guy?
thanks for all the help.
