Technically, Garrett DBB chras are rebuildable, however the tooling and machines required to perfectly repair and balance properly, is very costly. PTE has rebuilt DBB chras before, but when it's all said and done, in some cases, it's cheaper to just replace the entire chra with a new cartridge. If you treat a DBB turbo right, run water lines and properly oil feed line sizes with the restrictor, the only way you will screw one up, is if you ingest some FOD or contaminate the oil supply.
Garrett dual ball bearing cartridges cut their teeth on the streets of Japan and in Real WRC Rally competition. Many many years before Garrett finally ok'd the m for release to the US. The DBB cartridges were just coming out when I was stationed in Japan back in '91-'93. They used HKS and WRC as their test bed to perfect the technology before letting us crazy Americans get our grubby little hands on them.
