is turbo going out

I just took the exhaust elbow off of the turbo looks good fins aren’t touching but does have some in and out play is it going out or is this normal.

A little is normal on th ein & out. The up & down should be pretty tight. The main thing is that the fins are not rubbing the housing when you rotate the fins with a little pressure in diff directions.


Remember that when oil pressure gets to the bushings when the engine is running it will tighten up quite a bit. And most of the time you will have seal problems before the bushings go all the way out unless it is just the in & out & it gets enough slack to hit the fins to the housing. Pull on the shaft and rotate at the same time, then push on it and rotate, if no housing scraping I would guess it is OK.

Took the turbo in yesterday to a local turbo diesel shop who had redone one for my 83 T-type to get looked and i just got my turbo back and the fins were scraped pretty bad im def going to have to get it rebuilt or look into a upgrade.
