is xylene safe to use? I know alot of guys have recipe's on here on how to mix it but i am a little weary of putting a paint stripper or thinner (whatever it is) into my gas tank. Can someone give me some assurance?
YES, I have been using xylene or toulene since 1990.
When mixed 1gal to three gal of gasoline + add 1-2 oz of MM oil, no problems. A lots of time I add 1-2 gal to a full tank of gas, which you can tell. Not as good as 1 to 3 but for everyday driving when you don't have an alchy system, it does make a difference.
btw, its paint THINNER not STRIPPER. BIGG difference..
It is the main ingredient in race gas, fi cleaner and store bought octane booster. It won't hurt a thing.
I think I read an MSDS sheet at Chevron or Unocal about higher octane racing gases -- they get up around 25-30% xylene (plus a bunch of other ingredients).
So xylenes are a normal ingredient in gasoline, and shouldn't harm anything.
You can get it at your local auto parts store, it provides the lube that the Xylene dosen't have. BTW price around on the Xylene, I've found it at my local industrial supply store for much less than the local paint shop. - BB
I have been having good luck using 2 cycle oil at one ounce per gallon of xylene. It is made to lubricate, mixes readily with gasoline, and stays mixed.I have noticed no knock from using it.Bruce
I'm thinking of thowing in a gallon to clean out the fuel system which I don't think has ever been done before. Am I going to disturb anything that's been dormant (like in the gas tank) or anything of that nature? (I've got a disgruntled 122K on the clock)
I suspected my injectors were dirty, so I ran a gallon through with 1/2 tank of gas. Turned out to be a crushed fuel return line, but I have had no ill effects, and the car even passed the emissions test with flying colors on the first tank of gas after running the Xylene. I think this stuff is OK!

I pay particular note to the SAFE limits of the percentage of Toluline and Zylene in the mix. Too high a concentration of these chemicals will affect some ofthe parts in the fuel system, namely the seals....
Go to a Serwin Williams or a paint supply store.I buy it in 5 gallon cans for 27.00.I mix 3 gallons of xylene for every 6 gallons of Sunoco 94.I use 2 ounce of 2 cycle oil for every gallon og xylene. If you have a Postoin's catalog there is a formula to figure out how much octane you have in the tank.Xylene is 117 octane per gallon.I have run 18 pounds of boost on a street chip with no knock.Bruce
