Thought I would share a car story with you all. I know we all have many of these stories, so here is one of mine.
If most of you are anything like me, when you see an old car or Buick sitting in a yard you will pound on the door to the house to see what is up with it.
Sometimes you Pi@$#$$ people off, and sometimes you may get a deal on a car.
I knew of a Shelby GT 500 here in Alaska that I had asked this old guy to sell years ago. This was definatly one of thows Car in the barn stories. Every time I asked him about it he would get pissed and say, "hell no" its not for sale. So a couple years went buy and I thought I might call him or stop by. Well I talked myself out of it thinking I would just get the same answer (big mistake).
Now, just as luck would have it, a buddy of mine from Anchorage calls me up telling me about a Shelby he just bought from where I live in Fairbanks...Yep the Old guy changed his mind and sold it! Things do change, I should of bothered him one more time. My Buddy who bought the car sold it a month later on ebay and made 40k!
So learning from my mistakes, about a month ago I was driving by this shop as seen the back of a Regal parked way in the back of the yard. I said to myself, Awe thats most likely just a worn out non turbo 83-85 regal. I then reminded myself of my mistake with the shelby. So I turned around and went over to get a closer look...huumm it has a bulge in the hood? Interesting... So I go in the shop and ask the guys about it. They say it is a customers car and is having some brake work done and he does want to sell it. So I go pop the hood... Bingo! Intercooled Turbo! With 60k original miles!
I call the owner and end up knowing him. The power master was shot and he had hit the back of a truck with the Regal. Needs header panel and fender, easy fix. So I cut a deal with him to buy the car for $2300 bones.. a good score. Now the paint lacking but will work for a driver. That is what I was looking for, a simple driver. Got all my old parts to make it go fast, Te 34, 36lb.inj., exhaust..etc..
So I now have a new driver for the summer that I can drive and not worry about rock chips, door dings and all the stuff that comes with owning a really nice car like my GN or GSX. Their is something to be said for a Driver quality car.
Like I say it never hurts to ask when you see a car sitting. Especially when they have lost interest, you may score a deal.
