I like the 64 but the car has to be set up for it if you want it streetable. I only had it running with the 64 for a short time. I don't remember how much more if flows than a 49 but it's signifigant. Once into the higher boost levels, the power was unreal.
To make it spool nice on the street, you need ported heads and intake, at least a 3,200 stall convertor, 3" elbowless DP no catalytic convertor, and a good chip that runs lean off the start to get it to spool ok. TB relocation is a must also. Before some of those things were done it was a pig. If I wanted to pass someone in traffic I would have to floor it and back off as the boost slowly came in. With a little tuning and the addition of the 3" DP it made a huge difference in spool. My goal is 10s. If you're going for 11s or slower I would stick with the 49 as it spools way better, especially if your car has small problems like the occasional exhaust leak.
Mine was built as a TA turbo. it's in the stock 87 compressor housing so it bolts up just like a 49 would. It's getting converted as soon as I have the money. I modified my intake manifold so I now have the clearance for the TE housing.
