I just purchased one of these babies on eBay (its very similar to the Turbomotion V2 intake) and was wondering if anyone else out there is running one of these currently? If so, id like some tips, install-wise, and a list of parts i may need to aquire to complete the install.

I believe the EGR has been eliminated from the intake..does this require i modify the ECM in some way so the car doesnt run like crap, or will it run fine?

I tried running a search on this forum but nothing came up at all... :frown:

Any info would be most appreciated,

TIA

I have one of these on my car....or at least I did, but Im going to be selling it (lower intake) due to the lack of an EGR. I have to get my car smogged, and thats impossible with that intake. Anyways, as far as installation it was mostly straightforward. One thing that I can suggest you do first however, is to make sure that the plenum surface is true (flat). When I recieved mine it was not flat and made a major vacume leak. Of course I didnt find this out until my car was fully assembled, as I assumed the parts would be made correctly. This also happened to another member who purchased a kit.
Now besides that, you'll need an 86-87 throttle cable, 86-87 throttle cable/cruise control bracket, 86-87 IAC, 86-87 TPS.
I would highly suggest converting the ECM to the 86-87, in fact I think it may have to be because of the TPS and IAC, but im not positive. Though the EGR is deleted from the intake, you do not need an ECM change, just leave teh EGR solenoid attatched and everything will be fine. If you have an aftermarket chip, most all of them have teh EGR disabled anyways.Thats all I can really think of now off the top of my head. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask. The install took me about 3 days.

Well, hopefully my unit is flush but if worst comes to worst ill have to hook it up on my mill and machine it flat.

I already have an 87 ECM with an MAT so that takes care of that headache.

Thanks for the info!

Now, will it not pass smog due to emmissions or due to visual tests?

Well, it definately wont pass visual. As far as the actual test.....I dont know, I've heard that it's possible with a chip burned for emmisions but with EGR removed and everything else in the engine in perfect working order. In conjunction with that Ive heard that a larger cam and turbo can help make up for lack of an EGR, however I have no evidence of this.

My friend's 84 GN passed CA emissions with no EGR but the NOX was borderline, in fact it had to be tested twice and passed on the second. The difference is he had an EGR valve on the car but it wasn't functional. The smog guy will usually pull up on the valve to open it to make sure it's functional.

My V2 intake kit came with TPS/IAC wire connection extenders(not really sure what you would call them......they just add to the wiring of the TPS and IAC) to reach the throttle body, now that it sits in front of the intake.
You may need the "S" hose that comes off the water pump and hooks to the intake(86/87)?
Are you going to run an intercooler with the intake?
Going to need an 87 MAF to go with the 87 ECM.
Best tip I got is don't do too much at once, get the intake on there and running good. Then start throwing more at it. I threw everything on there at once and had a b!#$h of a time trying to figure out what part was causing my issues. Turned out to be a bunch of things........chip burnt bad(my biggest problem), maf pipe sucking shut, filter sucking shut(just to list a couple ;) ).

TPS and IAC extenders...yes good idea. would caspers have these??

I'm running an MAF translator and a 3" LT1 MAF, so i think im set there.

As for the S hose, its an 84/85 lower intake with a plenum welded on the top, so ill be using the stock plumbing there.

And yes ill be putting an intercooler on there, got one on ebay, 2.5 in and out, X2 Power one, looks decent enough and for a good price ( ~ 160 after shipping)

Are these kits still available? From where?

As long as you are using the stock thermostat housing then you don't need the "s" hose. Sounds like you are going to have a killer street car when you get her all put together. Best of luck........keep us updated.

no. no longer made. you'll have to custom make your own intake. Ive seen pictures of people modifying the lower 86/87 intake with a custom upper plenum. it can be done.

If anybody wants to see a picture of an 86/87 intake with a
modded Accufab upper plenum to fit a hot air turbo setup,
let me know and I'll send you some. I don't know how to post
the pictures, so I'll have to e mail them.

You bet I'm interested. You got a PM

Your PM box is full. Is the kit complete? How much are you asking for it?

To modify an Accufab plenum to fit on
the 86/87 intake and use a hot air turbo
setup, the plenum must have a section cut
off the back to fit under the turbo.
About a 2" X 3" plug then must be welded in
radiused to fit the turbo. Not much welding,
but it WILL distort the flange a little and
require a auto machine shop to resurface it.
Not a big deal here either. My local shop
charged my $15.00, I think.

Ah....damn, I was hoping the acufab plenum didnt need to be cut, so I could use a powerplate.

Ahh, but you can use the power plate.
Just not sure how the flow of a modified
Accufab plenum would work with one.
But you can sure use it, the base
of the plenum is not touched at all.
Just the shape of the back of the plenum
is changed a little.

Nah, reshaping the plenum makes the plate useless.
