Jagged edges on compressor blades?

The edge of the higher blades on my compressor are jagged -- full of knicks. I haven't noticed this on any turbo before...could something nasty have gotten into my intake?

It's aggravating! I have it outta the car right now...and I keep looking at it...getting more and more irritated.

Are they a standard size? If I wanted to replace it, what kinda options would I have? I'm using a 60-1 housing now -- are they fit to the specific housing -- or how would I know what I could use?

Is there anything missing from your MAF or air filter?

Sounds like your turbo ate something. Probably should have the thing rebuilt. Not sure about your options

Is there any play in the shaft? If so it may have knicked the housing. Bad news is if that happened the little pieces of metal went you know where.

Check you intake pre turbo as mentioned above. There may be a hole in your filter or MAF pipe on the bottom where it is not readily visible.

At any rate I would send the turbo out to be refreshed, and change your oil at a minimum, drop the pan at a maximum.

Also be sure to save the oil filter and cut it open to look for any small pieces of metal. Hopefully there are none.

Yep, I checked for those things. I didn't notice anything significant...But it must have sucked something into it. The shaft has ZERO play in it and spins nicely. It's a really nice turbo -- only about 10K miles.

I would say you have a couple of choices. You could use as is but if something did go thru, the balance is off and it might cause the bearings to wipe sooner, the other issue might be the performance will be down somewhat from the tips not being smooth conforming to the shroud. Or just send the cartridge out for cleanup of the compressor blades and a rebalance.

Just buy a new compressor wheel. They run about $50.00 and are real easy to change.
