Have you guys ever had or known someone who has/had one of the Jeep Liberty CRD Diesels? I'm looking at one now and the milage seems to be pretty good but how are they as far as performance and maintenance? Not looking for something I have to work on all the time (I own a GN for that;))

I saw a prototype deisel engine for the Jeep at the NY Auto show Jeep a while back and it was a 4 banger turbo. I can't remember if it was for the Wrangler or the Liberty though. I don't know performance specs but at least it was turbo charged.

The Liberty diesel has been out for a while (I saw an '04 on ebay) but I haven't heard much on how they are. They are rated at 21 city 26 highway but thats all I've found out so far.

I bought one new in '05.

They are only '05 and '06's in the US. Earlier than '05 is a European model.

We put 30K miles on it but unloaded it because I bought it for my wife and she hated the turbo lag and the quality issues (it would die if it got water in the Diesel and you have to open the hood and manually separate the water) and the expense/lack of availability of Diesel.

They get 26 mpg on the hwy @ 65-70 mph and 18-20 mpg in town. Once the turbo spools, they are quicker than the V6 and can tow a small trailer (5000 lbs max) pretty easily.

The quality issues are a definite negative. They have Expensive emissions controls and since there is less than 20K in the US it isn't like there is an expert on every street corner. There were some Trans problems too, due to the max torque coming at 1500 RPM.

My '05 had a 7/70 powertrain warranty (the '06's only had a 3/36) so I wasn't worried, but I'd be worried by now if I still owned it.

+1 my buddy owns one and he has to put a bottle of Injector cleaner in every 2 tanks of fuel, because the jeep didnt like low sulfur diesel and the check engine light would come on.

They didn't sell too well in the states. I don't know if they still offer them.

When I was in Paris 2 years ago I saw plenty of them. They were in the front of the showroom on Champs Elysees.

They didn't sell well in the US only because they were just test and Chrysler was only going to build a limited amount to see what the market potential was.

Chrysler knew that they wouldn't meet the stupid 2007 emission regs (no Diesel passenger car built in the world did at the time) so they weren't going invest too much into them.

The Europeans don't have to meet the 2007 US emission regs until next year, so they could still buy them, there.
