Ever see what you think is a hot babe, until you get close enough, only to find out she's a crow with blonde hair? (or a GUY!? :D)

I don't get out much lately, so most of what I know about new cars comes from commercials...been seeing a lot of "generic" GM commercials on TV, mostly snippets of this car or that car, that you can buy with zero interest for 92 years...

In these snippets, I've noticed a Caddy or two. Only get about a 1 or 2 second shot, and they're low-angle shots looking UP at the front end. I kinda liked the "chiseled" look...mostly cuz it's different!

Today one of 'em drove by as I was on my way home, so I was able to take a good look!

(insert Andrew Dice Clay "staccato" voice here)
OOOOOOHHH, who let that thing outta the UUUGGLY barn!!?????

Now I know why GM never showed the REST of the car! I honestly can't describe it, other than "yeechhh"!! My gawd, doesn't ANYONE work there that has any sense of what a "good looking" car is? at ALL??

If this is the future of car design other than "retro", I think I'm gonna puke! (good thing I like old cars) :D

One of the fun things about GM design is the way they have an uncanny ability to produce a car where the front end doesn't match the back end. Take a look at a new Monte SS. I swear it looks like the front end of the car was designed by one group of engineers and the ass end by another group.

By the way Kevin, got the decals in the mail. They were perfect! :) Thanks.

Kevin,

Keep in mind these are the same guys that brought us the Pontiac Aztek. That thing is the worst looking car I've ever seen. I think an Edsel is easier on the eyes.

Here is WHAT GM should do.

After they design a car or many versions of a model.
They should hire a whole bunch of people accross the USA
to vote thier opinion of the designs via secure web site.

That would send a message that the car looks ugly prior to producing it.

What about the new Sunfire front end? ---> UGLY

Saturn Ion --> UGLY

It's such a shame to see that company decline so much. There designs are about 3 years behind the rest of the pack.

I completely agree, looks like crap. As does the new Cavalier....the interiors are a joke too, I cant tell the difference between the two when I'm in either one. Oh well, whatever makes money right? GM's not doing too good. The GTO's not gonna help either, IMO.

GM just doesn't get it. Cheap plastic interiors and switchgear that would be considered low end for a toaster oven doesn't cut it anymore. GM is surviving off of their truck sales. As far as their cars go, very few folks around here drive a new GM vehicle unless it's a Vette. The only exceptions are the 90 year old blue-hairs that wouldn't drive anything other than a GM product. What's GM going to do once all the oldsters have finally kicked it?

After being loyal Chevy Truck Guy since 1986, I finally connot take it anymore. After taking the 2002 Silverado and hitting it with the ugly stick so hard on EVERY corner for 2003, GM has lost my next $40,000 CDN to Dodge. KMA, Chevrolet.

Have to agree there. I cant remember the last car they made that was a benchmark, the performance standard. All they know how to do is play catchup.

94 Camaro?

I thought when I first saw the commercials that they were going to say something about stealth technology. Didn't happen :(

Agreed. The Chevy's are Ugly with a capital U. Thank God they left the GMCs alone or I'd have a Ford in the driveway.

In 1962 the Dodges and Plymouths were beyond words ugly, now they don't look so bad. When the current Impala came out, I thought it was ugly, now it looks pretty good. The current Buick Lesabre looked good from the first day. The aztek will always be ugly. Some designs look good at first, then turn ugly, others look good after a few months/years.

I kinda like the looks of the caddys. At least they have some character. Everything else on the market looks like a freaking camry. I'm tired of the egg shaped cars with no lines. Most of the american cars look that way now. I'm glad the caddy designers put something different on the market. The new caddys are the first caddy i ever thought about owning.

blacksix,

better save another 5000 CND for when that drivetrain blows.
Dodge's have one of the worst drivetrain failure ratios on record.

GM...ARE YOU FREAKIN LISTENING?!?!?!

Lets see, where to start...well the Aztek...it may be high tek, but it's an ugly piece of a$$ droppings.

The Terracross...hrmm, my last set of Nike's came in a box with more style and character than that turd.

Ah, the re-introduction of the GTO. A warmed over Grand Prix at best...oh, sorry, it's a Holden from the Aussies. Maybe we'll see Vin Diesel rip a hole in the hood of this turd and feature it in "The Slow and Somewhat Annoyed XXXIV" No, that's not a roman numeral 34, it's the merging of the XXX character and an IV bag to keep the old man hydrated. In any case, that movie would be better than the GTO they're giving us. Somebody should have asked Delorean's opinion on the GTO project.

Hrmmm, the new Buick Ultra. WOW!!! $40G large for some new styled chrome portholes!?!?! I smell a design engineer cooking filets on a 35 foot stainless grill on his 150 foot yacht!

Oh, lest we forget the Buick Blackhawk. Hrmmm, lets see where to begin....well, a grill from 1939 that even the track announcer at Norwalk recognizes. OK, it has some style there. Look at the body lines...smooth, flowing, yet not a freaking euro trash look. Hrmm, kinda looks like a custom job reminiscent of the days the only thing euro about the car was the "English Wheel" that was used to make those sleek sexy fenders. A transplanted 95 Riv interior, but it does look at home. Another nice touch. Lets peek under the hood....[Tim Allen Voice] Rrr Rrr Rrr. More Power!!! I know more about the turbo 6's than the old big blocks, but for this car, I'm willing to learn, fast! Well, well, well, this is one pleasing package so far. Here comes the sun...lets see the real paint color. [Like looking at fireworks] Ooooooooooo, Aaaaaaaaaaaah. This color is soooo rich looking, it'll give that mystic crap a run for it's money. Well, it looks like we have a winner!!!! Build it!!!! What?!?!? You're not building it?!?!? Why not???? It won't make enough profit to justify retooling a plant to make this beauty? You've got to be kidding me?!? Chrysler made it work for their new models! We have a winner and GM just parades it around to say "Look what we could build, but we're gonna give you this warmed over bag of dog $hit instead". Oh well, lets look for another winner.....

Hrmmm, look at Ford and their new Mustang GT with 400 hp. GM, I know where all your future sales are headed. And Buick is going to be right behind Oldsmobile. Sad, since Buick launched GM. It is a sad day for GM buyers.

GM, are you listening? {or at least reading?}

Dan

I was having this conversation with my friend at the auto show in NY. There was not one GM product that got me going some stuff was ugly, some was just ok. I havn't had that ohhh i want that one! feeling about a new car in awhile, you know, the one that brings out that little boy inside. These sure aren't the cars of the future i used to dream of.
