I would drop the oil pump housing and take a look. I don't think it would have started back up if the cam sensor gear had sheered. But maybe there is an issue with the oil pump gear, or as stated earlier the pickup fell off.

well if it involves anything more than dropping the pan or removing the oil pump you will see a huge part out thread this board has ever seen or sell it outright for like 4 thousand when the trans alone lists for about half that
