Kansas Engineering Quiz Time

Challenge yourself here:

A Backhoe weighing 8 tons is on top of a flatbed trailer and heading east
on Interstate 70 near Hays, Kansas. The extended shovel arm is made of
hardened refined steel and the approaching overpass is made of
commercial-grade concrete, reinforced with 1 1/2 inch steel rebar spaced
at 6 inch intervals in a crisscross pattern layered at 1 foot vertical
spacing.

Solve: When the shovel arm hits the overpass, how fast do you have to
be going to slice the bridge in half? (Assume no effect for headwind and
no breaking by the driver...)

Extra Credit: Solve for the time and distance required for the entire
rig to come to a complete stop after hitting the overpass at the speed
calculated above.

Answer - Who cares, the trucking company just bought themselves a
bridge. And Driver just lost his job and license!!!!

Only another 8' and he'ld have cut it in 2. Nice job!

:(
This happens alot unfortunately....

I am willing to bet this is the scenerio as to why this happened.

Driver loads machine on nice cool morning, forgets to bind down the boom section.
As he drives down the road USUALLY A LONG HAUL the outside temperature increases 40° and the 2 main boom lift cylinders get heated.
That temperature increases actually will make the boom lift around 4-6 inches during the day.
NOT JOKING
I see machines at work lift during the course of the day because of thermal sumpenernother.... I forget the actual term.

Nice to see a long arm hyundai in kansas, i dont usually see them here because they are for digging ponds.

Thats alot of damage to both the machine and the bridge, ive seen worse

WOW

Thank God no one was driving on the upper bridge when it went through it. I could only image that scenario when a huge arm comes ripping through the road while you are heading straight at it doing 70mph!!
