My '87 has an issue..

I just bought this car in May (not running, mostly due to a dead battery and a sick MAF sensor) solid, straight car with just under 60k miles on it, all stock and original, never raced, never modified, bought it off of the 2nd owner since '98.

When you mash the gas it accelerates hard for a second or two, then acts like it's not getting enough fuel. It makes this electrical-type "cracking noise" once boost kicks in. But if you accelerate the throttle gradually, it's fine. Under gradual acceleration it pulls nice and smooth, as does while it's under a constant steady speed, no sputtering or anything.

So to help correct this problem after I've given it a tune up (new oil/filter, fuel filter, plugs (Delco R44TS), air filter and plug wires) the problem still persisted. I installed a new TPS sensor (just process of elimination) and the Racetronix/Walbro fuel pump and hotwire harness kit and it helped considerably... but the problem still slightly exists. 9 times out of 10 I can stage boost off the line and hold the pedal to the floor with no problems at all until the RPM's start to climb, then it starts to cut out again. I've been doing a bit of research, but I just wanted to know your guys' opinion. Could it possibly be the wastegate accuator/solenoid? boost lines between the turbo and the wastegate? I've also noticed that according to my factory "high-tech digital boost gauge" that I'm pushing more than 15psi, as it lit up past 15psi all the way to through the "redline". It still has the original non-adjustable wastegate accuator and turbo, so the ol' Garret was never replaced under warranty by the factory.. Any thoughts or ideas?

Get a fuel pressure gauge and mount it where you can monitor it from the cockpit while this is happening. This should diagnose any fuel related problems. You also need a good boost gauge to see where you boost is acually ending up at.

Could be numerous things, ignition related, wastegate etc... I would run a vacuum line between the wastegate and the turbo, bypassing the Y splitter and solenoid. The boost should be around 10 psi or so. See if the same problems persist.
Make sure every vacuum line is zip tied as well.

It makes this electrical-type "cracking noise" once boost kicks in. What you probably hear is detonation factory boost gauge is not accurate so that said asap purchase at least.

scan tool

On pump gas 15-17 boost is norm 02 volts around 800

Turned out to be a $16 part..the factory boost lines had a crack in it. Since been fixed.
