does anyone know of a way to make a laptop (IBM Thinkpad 600) power up directly to DOS, as opposed to waiting for Win 98 to come up first then run DOS? Prefferably without a boot disk (if possible).

Any down sides to running it without Windows running in the background? Still able to log & Save files?

Thanks,

Jeff

It's been awhile, but I think you can just comment (rem) out the line in your autoexec.bat file that calls on windows to start: Win or Win.com...

Cant remember if Win98 will do it, but you might be able to bang the F8 key to bring up the boot menu and choose "Command Prompt Only". ..Another way(permanent) if you are up to it is, you can make a change to the BOOTGUI line in MSDOS.SYS. You change from "1" to "0". You can modify it when you type "msconfig" in the run box, IIRC..Then to load windows you just type "win".. No need for windows at all if you are trying to run DirectScan. Powerlogger needs it, but DS doesnt... HTH

Jbenn...

I was able to get the puter to allways ask for the command prompt. In the run box I did the msconfig.. that opened up a window. The other options you listed wern't on there (or I'm not smart enough to find them:tongue: ).

But I was able to "enable startup menu", and that gave me the command prompt option.. which works like a charm.

BUT... what's the command to run direct scan??? I thought it was just "DS".. but that won't work. Still works fine if I open it up through windows... so I'm wondering if I don't know the right command.

Thanks.

It is "DS", yes.. With a DOS prompt, you'll probably have to change directories to wherever you put Directscan in order to get it to run.. When I had that setup, I just put DS in the root or "c:\" directory...
