Yes. I was told they crank all the setting to the highest so they look great in a brightly lit store. Each room will need tweaking. I brought down the brighteness of mine quite a bit. I was so bright I was bothering me.

Maybe if I was not spending so much time in front of that damn TV, my GN would be further along

Now turn off the sets and get over to the suspension-tech section and help me figure out a new set-up!

Adjust the contrast and brightness - turn off all the color and contrast enhancers - makes it look bold in the store next to other TV's but not a realistic picture and then walk from behind an LCD, around to the center front. I always notice a change in the LCD picture, of course ya can't have too much angle on an LCD or there will be no picture.

Many LCD's have a screen door effect too

I do run mine "normally". And no there's no change in the picture as I move around it.
Now, The LCD screen for my computer monitor does that, quite badly.

But not my current TV. The picture doesn't change, even a little bit. But then again it's brand new technology.

Get a LCD

Plasma uses twice a much energy (your electric bill will show it...)
Plasma has glare from light

I have a Sony top of the line, and everyone that comes to my house loves it

I can feel the heat from the plasma screen - they do use some power and they do have a rather large hunk of glass up front.

Samsung 46 LCD (LN-T4671F) is all you need. DLP , you get more for your money but watch out for the bulbs. Recommend the additional warranty on DLP.
Mitsu. or Toshiba has the DLP 62"+ size with is an awesome buy for your money if you do not want to hang it on the wall. Ya, plazma has a bit of a glare but still nice.

I have both Plasma 42" Tatung 1080i and 36" Polaroid LCD and the plasma blows away the LCD....better for sports in HD and better in veiwing angle...does generate some heat.....had the plasma for 2 years now with no change in picture quality...oh and blue ray disc from PS# is frikking awesome

Only glare if there is bright light shining on the screen

Plasma blows away DLP

But then I can easily tell the difference between digital and film too. I Probably spend to much time looking.

The heat generated by my plasma is not any different than my old 26" tube one. It's not like you can fry an egg on it or something.

Thanks guys; the room the TV will be going in is a pretty bright room; with quite a few windows:cool:

I just picked up a Visio 32" LCD for our bedroom; great picture, no side-angle viewing problems, and the price (with the Costco 1 year warranty extension) was right.

I've run progressive scan DVDs and HD cable signals thru it, and I am pretty impressed. The room is fairly bright, and glare has not been a problem.

I'm not going to get involved in that HD/Blu-Ray war till the dust setttles (Sony will probably lose again- call it "Son of BetaMax"). As soon as 1080p is a broadcast standard, I'll think about getting a set with that capability- the 720p/1080i in the Visio works just fine.

Just my dos centavos........

My room is pretty bright during the day with 2 east facing and one south facing windows that get sun most of the day. I just shut the shades. The antiglare coating works well for me. I have never been not able to watch my tv because of the ambient light.

It looks like Sony may WIN the media battle. Warner bros has decided to back blue-ray exclusively. Only Paramount and Universal are still with HDDVD and seem to be waffling!

Hi JohnDeerGN- there's been some good advice in this thread but consider the pro's and cons considering I've had both TV's.

If it's going to be putting it in a room with bright windows, then you're much better off with an LCD. You won't regret it. It makes a big difference.

I find it really annoying to watch TV, and see glare from either a window or lamplight or any light for that matter. Plasma TV's have a nice picture, but have a good look at the LCD's out there. Choose ones with a really bright, clear screen.

Sony (my top choice, and also for sound too)
LG
Samsung
And a couple others. Have a good look at the others in the store and choose a screen which has a bright, clear, picture and no fuzziness or contrasts at all.

Another thought you can do is buy it from a good Store which has a good return policy. Circuit City, Best Buy, Sears, etc. Try them both out - LCD and Plasma. Let them know upfront, you'd like to buy the TV, but if it doesn't work out for you, that you can return it and swap it out for a different one. Ask them if they have a return fee or open item fee.

So, that means you can try both of them and see which one works better for you, and your living area.

Remember, you'll pay more a year in your electric bill for Plasma. Up to a couple hundred dollars, believe it or not especially the bigger the screen you get. 42 inch screen is a nice size, and will generate considerable heat.

In order to never pay an opened item item fee, what you do is say that the item was broken or defective. This deter's any 15% fee for just about anything. If they still try and charge you that, you get the manager to take it off your return, new purchase or trade in. It's unethical to charge someone that 15% open item fee if the item was defective in any way.... and that means if it doesn't work out as well -
